Re: Everyone thinks they know better....
This will make you laugh.. One family event I was asked (my family is polite) "Can I give Maddoxx a piece of my sandwhich?".. I chuckled and said " Sure, if he will take it!" My family bent over and offered it to Maddoxx and he immediately looked at me, because he knows he cannot...

Re: Chow random freak outs.
1, Sleeping chow. I would suggest that your mom or anyone approaching any sleeping dog make noise or make the dog aware you are there before petting them. Good idea for humans too. If you startle a dog or chow they will barking and then realize who is there, but there is always that wake up period. ...

Re: Chows Not intelligent? Please.
Thinking Dogs - Yes. When people ask about my chows and the thinking part, I show them this example: I will take Maddoxx and a ball. I will throw the ball and Maddoxx will go and get it. I throw it again and he looks at me and then lays down. " If you can't hold on to the ball, that is your pro...

Re: How can I show dog I'm boss and protect cats
Consistency, You have to maintain the sames rules no matter who is in the house, and even when you are not there. If the pup will chase cats when you are not there, then you have to put your pup somewhere during those times where he won't have access to them. Puppy is tough, it is tough, short atten...

Re: How did u get your chow use to being brushed
As a puppy start with very short brushing sessions, use different types of brushes. They need to get used to it. It is not so much they need brushing, more they need to get used to doing as they are told and the brushing WILL be necessary later. Our evening with a puppy starts with me sitting on the...

Emergency Room visit: Marru
Last night I was getting a coffee around 9:00pm (decaf) and heard the sound of stomach pumping and quickly found Marru vomiting on the floor. This normally does not bother me. My chows have vomited from time to time because the ate some grass, licked a frog, did not take well to a medication. So as ...

Re: Nala and Simba playing
Wow Pinoy, beautiful chows. Maddoxx would never play with Marru, more tolerates her. That is great to see.
It is also a great demonstration how Chows have a natural defense with their fur. The young pup could get a good mouthful and pull and shake. All to no effect.

Re: Lump under his ears
On on each side of his head. That doesn't sound worrisome to me, If he has a matching pair then it could just be his jaw bone or neck vertebra. Best to ask the vet. My vet finds me funny with our questions, but appreciates the fact we know our dogs so well. Long before a problem is critical, we have...
Re: New Puppy
With a puppy you have an advantage, and it only last a year or so use it.. That advantage is their desire to be cuddled and given affection. Marru ( 1 year old now) would do anything for some affection. So instead of treats she would get petting, a cuddle, time on the floor playing. When I wanted he...

Re: Maddoxx: Bathing, dry skin and oily fur
I have the best Vet in the world. Called me to see how Maddoxx was doing. So a 12 days ago, I gave Maddoxx a bath. New Shampoo from vet. Douxo Sebhorrhea Shampoo. Day 1 Maddoxx was itchy but not shaking itchy, normally he hides for a few days, laying in his nite spot and gets over the urge to scratc...
Re: New Puppy

Re: Biting
Good news: Everyone who has had a puppy went through the biting phase. Do a search for bite inhibition on this forum, you will find the training needed. In terms of getting squeezed by the door. First, check to make sure there is no physical damage, everything is healthy. If in doubt see your vet. N...

Re: Chow treats and training
Judy was spot on when it comes to training a baby chow. It happens all day long. Respecting the rules of the house. It terms of training to sit and stay, lay down, give paw. Try teaching one at a time. Sit is usually the first. But with chows a formal training session is tough. I started by sitting,...

Re: How to introduce new puppy ???
Our chows can surprise us when we step back and let nature take its coarse. Using and understanding the Pack mentality can make things so much easier. Once we let Maddoxx be part of the training and confirmed his position. LIfe go so much easier. Very happy you have such success, all the anxiety is ...

Re: chow pup not eating that much
For puppies I wet my food so it was moist and easier to chew and digest. I did not make a gravy or have enough liquid for there to be a gravy. It was just wet food. When they are eating normally and you add things, to entice or treat. You create a problem. Maddoxx had a rough day at the vets and beh...

Re: chow pup not eating that much
What food is best.. That is a whole discussion, check the forums. If your breeder used Royal Canine then keep using it. The amount a puppy should eat is on the bag. When ( and you will ) decide to change, you start mixing them so the new puppy gets used to be taste and then ween out the Royal Canine...

Re: my chow so cuddly is that chow like?
You have a puppy! My experience so far. 5 chows over a lifetime. The first year, Puppies are attention seekers and go against their own reputation. Marru is 1 year now and loves to cuddle and play, licks and loves being adored. In fact, she will get insulted if you ignore her. " I am so pretty,...

Re: Occasional Behavior Issues
When Max bites you or pushes you away or steps infront of you, his message is clear, you are NOT his master and he is taking control. I would be greatly insulted if I was you. The correction you did with food was spot on. Own his food. It is your food until you let him have some. Window aggression a...

Re: pup not asking to go out or using paper
Well said Judyfox. You could take a piece of newspaper out and rub it in the pee and bring it back inside. That way it will smell like a pee spot. Therefore attaching newspaper to pee. The best way to get your chow to WANT to go outside is to go out often and reward the behavior. Rule of thumb I was...

Re: New pup panting and drinking a lot
Day 1 at home is so exciting for you and the puppy. I imagine she/he is getting lots of attention. Panting and drinking are good signs. The signs to watch out for are loose stool. In fact for the first couple of month you will be watching all poos. This is the best way to figure out how they are doi...

Re: We are already making progress with training
Here is a little clarification on pack order: Humans become the leader by performing. Dogs don't. So oldest or youngest is not the order. First to sit down or behave is not pack leader either. As humans we reward the first to behave. Your dogs will show who your leader is. It sounds like the Chow is...
