Re: Patellar Luxation
We opted for the surgery right away as Julie was in pain. Panting and limping. Fortunately the doc was very familiar with the condition. They told us we could wait and see if it corrected itself but they said there was little chance it would. She is good for the most part now, one year later, but it...

Re: Julie limping and just so sad
Hi Louise, Hopefully Jed is still doing ok. Julie is having trouble settling down and seems to be in a bit of pain. The doctor was quite confident that she will have a smooth recovery. He noticed that her leg is a bit bowed, probably part of what caused the luxation of her patella. Julie has no dres...

Re: Julie limping and just so sad
Thanks CoraP. Unfortunately, I scheduled Julies surgery apt. this morning for Oct. 5th. Her leg has only been getting worse. We can't wait to get this all over with. It just breaks our hearts to see her in such pain. For all of those out there who have dealt with surgery, leg/knee or otherwise, any ...

Re: Julie limping and just so sad
The Vet visit went well, Julie was a very good girl. The Vet said she has Patellar luxation, dislocation of the kneecap. The next step is to have the radiologist take a closer look at the film and see if surgery is needed. Anyone have experience in Patellar luxation? One positive of the whole fiasco...

We've squeezed everything, but we might try again.
I'm hoping the Vet will have some answers tomorrow. She is just so sad, it breaks my heart.

Julie limping and just so sad
We noticed yesterday, of course the only day the Vet offices are closed, that Julie was limping. At times it was just a small limp and at other times it has been a full on hop with out putting her foot near the floor. I called a new Vet this morning, we still haven't found one that we really like, a...

Re: chow chow and its smell
I have never met a breed that has a better smell. Rocco smells like grapes and Julie smells like baby powder. They are rarely in need of a bath and neither of my dogs enjoy walking in mud or puddles and will avoid them at all costs. They also clean their paws like a cat.

Re: Treats, Which do you use? Healthy
Rocco and Julie love Duck Breast Jerky, and Yummy Chummies (Wild Alaskan Salmon treats). The duck breast is crunchy (you can do Chicken Breast too, Rocco is allergic to chicken) and they're both very pungent. The chows go crazy for them, and nothing else. For a longer lasting treat, we do bully stic...

Re: learning to lay down
Julie was exactly the same. From an abusive situation and scared of everything but, slowly she has come around. She used to think that everyone was following her or out to get her and now she doesn't budge/move for anyone unless she wants to. Noises no longer make her jump and she rolls on her back ...

Cute Chow Chow kids toy
Ran across this on Craigslist and thought it was adorable. Its rare to see the Chow Chow as a kids toy.

Re: I HATE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T CONTROL THEIR DOGS!
We have a similar problem going on in our neighborhood at the moment, and with Julie still not comfortable with any dog other than a chow, I want to talk to the people. But how does one go about saying, "You are an idiot to let your dog out the front door to roam around the neighborhood jumping...

Re: I need some food help please
Wellness has a new Allergy line and also Wellness Core which I believe is gluten free and a very good food. The fur-kids used to get Wellness Core until we discovered Rocco's Chicken allergy. Their website is also very helpful.

Re: Ice Water
Thanks. I forgot about bloat. I did a little research and there are many different opinions. It seems as long as we wait to give the ice water to them between 1/2 hour and 1 hour after they eat and not right before they go play they will be fine, but I think I will have a talk with their vet. Julie ...

Re: Need Help Finding New Food
Wellness was too rich for my Rocco and after a long search we have found that he is allergic to chicken (at least that is what we think)??? We feed SG Wolf King. Both Rocco and Julie are looking and feeling fantastic. No more itchy flaky skin, no more runny stools, and his coat is way fuller.

Ice Water
I've been giving the pup's Ice Water for a while now, and am suddenly wondering if its okay. I searched the forum and found a few people have suggested a few ice cubes on hot days, but my chow's get a full bowl of heavy on the ice, ice water everyday. They love it. Julie pulls several cubes out and ...

Cora she is doing great! Thanks for asking. We've been busy lately so we haven't been on the forum much. Its been slow going but so worth it. She is such a lover! She just learned how to sit . We cant wait for more good weather so that we can get her to the park for more socialization.

I usually don't post my opinions on such topics, but, a baby (especially that young) or child should never be left alone not even for one second, dog or no dog. Why didn't she just take the baby into the bathroom? It was a horrible accident but she is ultimately at fault. Yes the dog did do a horrib...

I will ask her and also get the publishers name for you when I get home tonight. She has been able to get us one every year for the past 5 years.

We got a Chow calender.. as usual. My mom hunts for it every year. I made paw print ornaments for DH from each of the chowlings and the cat. It was so fun to see the chow babes in the snow... I will post some pictures soon.

Re: Scratching the grass.
Rocco does the grass flicking dance as well. I was told that its how some dogs mark (along with the regular "marking")... they have glands in there feet... made sense to me. Julie does not do it but she runs away from her #2's, either she just likes getting rid of the dead weight or she re...
