Re: Is it right for us? (Family with small child)
First and foremost, Chow Chow are a strong (willed & physical strength) breed, and knowing they were bred as guard dogs, meaning they need lots of socialization that is constant and ongoing, a well definition of who is the Alpha in the pack, an extreme understanding of their temperament. I perso...

Re: Can I get a chow?
Before getting a chow chow, it would probably be worth while to getting to know the breed first. One of the main reason why people get chow chow's is they look cute when in puppy form. But as they grow and get older, their personality really start to blossom, and as Natalie mentioned, they're a grea...

Re: Another year successful year for my Chow pack
I think it depend on several factors. - do you have the space to have more than one dog outside? - is it secure? - how social is your dog with other dogs? Dominant, Friendly, Submissive or a mix of? - I'd recommend getting one that is similar in age, size, weight and temperament. Getting a puppy can...

Another year successful year for my Chow pack
Bruin, Chewie and Chow Fun celebate another year. Bruin now 3yo and being here with us for the past two years and seeing how wonderful and loving he is, I'm glad he found his way to us. Chewie is 4yo and has become the Alpha and keeps Bruin in line. Since getting Bruin she's had to bulk up in muscle...

Re: I have a 4 month old chow and a one year old boxer
Some discipline training is a start. Monitoring and interacting with them when they swap bowls - correct the action by either scolding or forcing then to eat out of the the bowl that was given to them. I had to teach my male chow to not wonder away, this meant some hand feeding or hold his bowl to e...

Re: Bruin and New Family Photo
Ok, I admit I been a bit absent and some what delinquent in keeping everyone posted. Bruin has become extremely well adjusted in our home and has made it his home too in the year he's been with us. Have been able to break all his bad habits except one, the passion to chase bird, regardless if flying...

Re: chewie the chow chow
Its been a year and two days since Chewie came to us. Looking back at the day when she arrived, nervous and scared about being in a new place and with people and dogs that she didn't know. She was a prissy little princess and didn't really know how to be a dog. Funny little quirks that we noted were...

Re: 7 month in san francisco
Bruin has found himself a new family today.
Though this our first evening together, tonight Bruin has been playing with Chewie (whom we adopted back in Sept2008 from Texas), the two of them have been playing ball and chasing one another all over the yard.
More to come...

Re: chewie the chow chow needs loving family
Another update: Chewie and my other dog (Chow Fun, aka Funny or Funny Bones or FunnyGrrl) are building a greater bond with one another since Funny's sister (Chow Mein) died on March 04, 2009 at the age of 14. Both have shown signs of missing their house/yard mate, but seem to be bouncing back. Chewi...

Chow Mein: 1995-2009
Last night we had to say good-bye to Chow Mein, she died just before midnight. Here in the SF bayarea, about 10pm the skys were relatively clear and not too cold. Chow Mein knew she was dying and decided to spend her last few hours outside looking to the sky and enjoying the fresh air. She was in go...

Re: chewie the chow chow needs loving family
Update: Its been almost three months since adopting Chewie, and she is doing really well. When she arrived, she acted more like a privileged child or a princess and seem to lack the senses of being a dog, and kept her distance from my other two chow girls (as expected). Though she still acts a littl...

pacing and sleepless at night
I have three chow girls, one 2yr old (named Chewie, cinnimon), the other two are 13.5 yr old sisters (Chow Mien and Chow Fun, both are white), but Chow Mien tends to be sleepless in the evening hours and begins pacing around the house, starts and stops thru out the night/early AM , and only happens ...

Re: chewie the chow chow needs loving family
Hi everyone, I'm Chewie's new owner here in California. Just to bring everyone upto date, she is doing really well for being uprooted from Texas and transplanted in the heart of Silicon Valley, California with only four days under her collar. She's a character, actually a little princess that needs ...
