Re: Chow puppy and size!

17"- 20" is listed as the average in the AKC breed standard but there is no size that disqualifies them.

Re: Entropion Surgery

We went to a very highly regarded eye specialist with our Brisco when he was 6 months old and he said that he needed the surgery. We didn't think his eyes were normal but not really that bad either. We told the Vet that we were going on a 2 week vacation and would have to wait to get the operation u...

Re: Should I get chow chow?

I agree Stella1, Ideally it would be nice and probably better all around if your dog was allowed to come inside at times. My only point was that there are good dogs with loving parents that don't allow them in. And if someone really wants a dog that has to stay out then that is O.K. My dogs do come ...

Re: Should I get chow chow?

I just wanted to say to Constantina, that just because No9's parents say that they don't want a dog in the house doesn't mean that they wouldn't be there to love the dog and help with it in any way. Stating things as facts like he/she will be all alone in caring for the dog is something that was not...

Re: Should I get chow chow?

I disagree completely with these last 3 responses. I have had 5 Chows now, my first one back in 1981. All of my Chows including my now 15 month old have always been outdoor dogs. I will admit that my dogs do come in occasionally but very seldom. I now have a dog door so it is their choice and my fem...

Re: other dogs

Neutering a dog has very few health benefits if any, and several possible adverse affects. I'm not saying people shouldn't have their dogs neutered but it shouldn't be done because you think it is better for their health, Do your research. In your case it may be required but it's not too unusual for...

Re: Chow + Children

Of course if you are stupid enough to laugh when a dog growls at a child you are an idiot and you probably shouldn't even have a dog, or a child for that matter. I have had 5 Chows now in the past 30 years and I've had two that I would trust 100% even with a baby. My boy Brisco who past away last ye...

Re: Question

I don't believe that your poor vision would affect your relationship or training with a Chow or any other breed for that matter. Dogs especially Chows are smart, they can sense things and pick up on things that you'd be amazed at. I find that a dogs body language is more telling than there eyes when...

Re: Not eat and is throwing up

If it were me, I'd take him to the Vet to have him checked just to be sure there is nothing medically wrong. I've had Chows that have gone 4 days without eating when upset with a move or a big change in circumstance but it would be a shame if it is medical and it didn't get fixed in time. The throwi...

Re: tips on crate training

Simba's Mom, I personally really dislike the Idea of crate training and would never do it and never have in all my 40+ years of dog ownership. I feel if you don't have an adequate yard or property to keep a dog then you shouldn't have one. And if you live in an apartment or something then get an app...

Re: Recommendations for a training book

Hi Sansa, I'm not sure about a good training book, but here is a post of mine from years ago that I think Might give you some insight that could help with your training. I can't stress enough that a Chow WILL hold a grudge if scoulded too harshly. I've had 5 of them now and one is a 4 month old that...

Re: Why does my chow look different?

That is a bit small but she looks beautiful and like a pure Chow to me. I've got a 4 month old and he is 30 lbs and what I consider kind of normal size for a boy. I would expect mine to end up at 65'ish. Mine is a Smooth coat type and the ears look like your pups ears. I've had 5 Chows and they all ...

Re: New Puppy!

Winnie is very cute. Just remember that chows don't take really harsh discipline well. They will hold a grudge. Try to be firm but don't scare her accidentally by yelling too loud or smacking her. You do need to be firm but I try to just do enough to get the point across, they are very smart. I'm su...

Re: Fair price?

Sorry everyone, even you Rory's dad. This was just supposed to be about crazy prices. That is really my only gripe, and it just can't be justified to me. It has started to sound like I prefer non-show dogs and that's not the case. I just don't think that it makes a better dog as long as you deal wit...

Wow! you seem to be defending against everything I said, so you must consider yourself one of these "quality breeders". Firstly, I didn't say there were only 3 breeders, I said that I could only find 3 with puppies. Secondly, Yes I have been to many dog shows and find many of the dogs to b...

Re: Fair price?

I think that Dog prices in general are ridiculous these days. I live in Australia and paid $750 each for my two Chows 11 and 13 years ago. Our boy Brisco died a few months ago age just over 13. We just purchased another male black smooth coat for $3000. This is a crazy number, unfortunately, in all ...

Re: Acts like something is hurting her rear end.

I know it's a bit late but I've only just got back on the forum. Our 10 year old girl Dixie was doing the same thing, very distressed at times. It took our vet 5 minutes to figure out that it was her *Censored Word* gland. She cleaned (cleared) it and had us put her on a fibre supplement, Metamucil ...

Re: crate training puppy?

I personally hate crate training and do not believe that it should ever be used. I will get in trouble for saying this, but, I think if you need to confine a dog to a small cage for a long period of time, maybe you should think twice before getting a dog in the first place. There are many other type...

Re: Why do Chows have such a bad rep?

LINDS1425, Your statement that most Chows turn on there owners is absolutely ridiculous and not true. What is more amazing is that you believe this, and still go on to say that you are totally for Chows. Why would you support ANY breed that you expect to turn on it's owner? Just crazy talk.

Re: Chow-compatible breeds?

I think that all breeds can get along depending on how they are raised and/or introduced to each other. My neighbors have a Staffy that jumps the fence quite often just to come play with my two Chows, they're great friends and only met as adults.

Re: Rennie/ My Wonderful Boy

I would wait on the eye surgery. Unless it is very bad, many Chows including mine grow out of it. Here in Australia it is $1700 an eye and vets seem more than happy to book an appointment. I told the vet that we were going on Holiday and would have to wait until we returned so he gave me some ointme...

Hi,
I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly but I live in Australia and found it impossible to find a rolled leather collar here. Here is a website in the States that I ordered two collars from made to order, color and size. http://www.schaafleatherwork.com/pages/dog/collar2.html

Re: 8 Week Old Female Chow - Scared/Shy HELP

What a cutie! I wouldn't worry either. Like Blackbear said, it's her territory and her instinct, not only as a dog, but as a Chow especially, to protect it. She is only small and is probably a little overwhelmed and maybe a bit intimidated when great big strangers come in, and no doubt want to pet h...
