Re: Puppy aggressively bites ankles on every walk

My Boogie did this when he was a puppy. He would attack our legs and ripped most of my daughters pants with his razor sharp puppy teeth. We had to continue the very loud ouch and then ignore him until he settled and then start again. It was very tedious and we would barely make it around the block. ...

Re: Time to say goodbye to my beloved Sheena

Jennifer,
I am so sorry for your loss. Sheena lived a long happy life with you but I know it is never long enough. Sheena is in good company with so many that have gone before her. Run free Sheena.

Re: Chow Chow Fest in Northern California 2014

We had a great time at Chowfest too even though it was bittersweet having lost Boogie just a week before. I am so happy that he was able to be part of the memorial. Thank you! His candle is on the shelf next to Fozzie's. O:) I had my handful with my 2 year old granddaughter and Teddie so I didn't ev...

Re: Boogie is now free from all his pain

Thank you all for your kind words. I appreciate them. Lou, I hadn't RSVP'd to Chowfest because of what was going on with Boogie. I have been so sad but I think you might be right and it might be what I need to start healing. And we reminded Boogie of all his Chow friends that he was going to see inc...

Boogie is now free from all his pain

Today we had to make the devastating choice to have Boogie put down. He was in so much pain and stopped eating and drinking. Caitlyn bought him all his favorite treats including flaming hot Cheetos and he tried to eat some but couldn't. Caitlyn and I took him on a long car ride to all his favorite p...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe

Karen, I am so sorry. You and Jeff must be devestated. How is Shiloh doing? Mr. Nahkohe is in great chow company across the rainbow bridge and unfortunately will be joined by one more very soon. I haven't been on the site in quite a while and am going thru something similar with Boogie. I came to th...

Re: Teddie and the bunny

Update on Teddies's bunny. He is still here. This bunny is crazy (like everyone else in this house). I read online that he needs time to be out in the house so I let him out to wander. The cat came out to see him and the bunny attacked the cat. I am sure if I let him out with the dogs he would attac...

Re: Help!badly need a good groomer..any advice?thanks!

Sorry, I am in the US so I am not familiar with what they have in the Philippines. My Chows don't like the groomers and a lot of groomers where I live won't work on Chows. Here they have places where you can do your own bathing and use their high power blow dryers. It is much easier to groom them yo...

Teddie and the bunny

Tuesday night I was out on my walk with Teddie (one of my Chows) and Teekie (my Pekingese). All of a sudden Teddie put on the brakes and started making his high pitched noises and refused to move. I looked around and saw a bunny rabbit across the street. I dragged my two down the street and the bunn...

Re: Does Anyone Let Their Chow Walk Without a Leash?

I have seen it be done but I really wouldn't recommend it. Chows are a headstrong breed. They are not as eager to please as other dogs and might decide to run off after something. They also love to turn catching them into a game. If you teach your chow how to walk well on a leash, there should never...

Re: Does your dog have papers?

Did he mean pedigree papers? Most rescue dogs do not have them unless the original owners hand them over. I am guessing that he is going to try and count the value of a purebred dog as property. Divorce is so much fun. Tell him she's a mix.

Re: Loss and Chow Chow reputation

I think you did the best you could with the information you were given. I actually feel the vet (and of course the previous owner who abandoned their hurt 11 year old chow) should be the ones feeling terrible. I didnt mean to infer that you were responsible for the outcome beacause you are not. Adop...

Yes, those are good signs. I am glad to hear she is feeling a little better. Animals grieve too. She has to go through the process.

Re: Loss and Chow Chow reputation

Oh no. That is so sad. I am sorry you were bitten and hope you are ok. Of course she was in pain. They should have given you a lot more information. They make ramps for older arthritic dogs to get in and out of the car. She just met you, of course she wasn't going to trust you especially while she w...

Re: Our Chow Chow will not go for walks with me

I wouldn't take it too personally. Chows can be very fickle. They are also very stubborn. Most likely your Chow found something she likes about walking with your girlfriend and now she is going to be stubborn about only going with her. My Chows do things like this all he time. Also Chows have memori...

Re: Puppy or Adopt

I agree with Maikinda. Try a foster to adopt situation through one of your local rescues. This way you can help Chows and find the right addition for your family. I foster Chows and have kept a few along the way for my family as well. Occasionally there are puppies at the shelters but most likely yo...

Re: Our Chow Chow bit my dad, what do i do? Help please!

I agree with the others that you can definately benefit from some training but I do want to add that you will need to find a positive reinforcement trainer that is comfortable working with chows otherwise you will make this worse since your Chow will trust you even less. Chows are a dominant breed. ...

Re: Stating my opinion, let me know yours

What I have found with Chows is not that they are overly aggressive but that they don't give off typical "dog" warning signs before becoming aggressive. A lot of shelter workers and vets don't like them because of this. Once you get to know your chow, you will better know how to read him. ...
