Re: Potty training advice

Most puppy accidents are down to the owner not being alert enough. Sirchow is correct with that. It has been a few years since my two were puppies, but that triggered my memory. The first day I had Malachi, he was like a leaky faucet. Just about every time he stopped, I was cleaning up a puddle. Th...

It is also possible that Pete saw the dog as an intruder into his space.

Re: Chows and cats

My chows were raised with the cats, so there is no issues. Malachi always wants to smell Ace when he comes in, and Ace gives him a disgusted look. Chelsea, our Persian, is the queen of upstairs. Malachi gives her plenty of distance. Ursa doesn't even notice the cats most of the time.

Re: What is that?

Your Eddie has that reddish tone like Malachi, and he can look just like a bear. I will have to get out my "Right to keep and arm bears" tee shirt, put it on him and take a picture.

When I take them out I hear "Oh, they are so fluffy".

Re: My two chow chow dogs are fighting badly

It only takes someone to ring the doorbell for them all to kick off and that guarding instinct and aggression has to go somewhere. They cant reach the person at the door so it goes to each other instead. Been there and done that. Let's say the garbage truck comes down the street. Ursa and Malachi g...

Remember that she is a baby and has a small bladder. Additionally she does not have full control of her bladder at this time. You have to take her out to the grass frequently. She will learn, it won't be long.

Re: Itchy Skin--Dermodex Mites?

I can tell you that Malachi has issues when the weather turns warm. I am guessing it is insects that bother him, but really don't know. The other day he chewed off a large patch of fur on his side, and I took him to get a steroid shot. I try to avoid the shots, but about twice a year he get to where...

I will throw my two cents in here on getting a rescue. Both of my chows are rescues. I love them. They are really great dogs. They are dogs, and you have to WORK with them and train them, but you get out what you put in and more.

There are additives you can add to your dog food to make poop distasteful. Punishing your puppy will not get the results you want. Chows definitely have their own view on things, and you have to work with their personality, reinforce positive behavior and try to redirect inappropriate behavior.

Re: 2 year old chow very anxious - need advice

I have lots of questions, but we will gloss over that for now. Are you taking her out in public regularly? She needs to be exposed to the wide world. I have two chows, fairly well socialized, BUT, if I don't take them out in public they become overly protective. If she has a problem being out with a...

Yes, I know that high pitched bark. Ursa likes to use it for squirrels, but especially if she sees a bird on the ground. She is fascinated by them and will carry on a long conversation telling me all about them.

Re: help! 3months old won't eat, shy and feared

My chows don't bark that much unless there is something they see. I am fostering a Chow Samoyed mix, and he wants to bark all the time for no particular reason. That is rubbing off on my two chows.

Re: help! 3months old won't eat, shy and feared

Sounds like your girl is overwhelmed by all the changes. You might consider covering the top and back side of the cage so that it feels a bit more secure. It took Ursa a long time to feel safe and secure. Lying on the floor sounds like a good idea. You want to make her secure in her new home and com...

Re: Suddenly being aggresive, help!

Rory's Dad has some good advice. It sounds like you have had some changes in the household, and this has upset Bear. Bear's humping the other dogs is a sign of dominance. He probably has some issues from before you got him, and he wants to maintain top dog status. If your boyfriend and his dog are n...

Re: puppy loves children but is scared of adults.

Wow, that sounds a lot like Ursa when she was a puppy. For the most part, she has outgrown it, but then I have spent a lot of time and effort socializing her. I am relating my experiences with her, and the biggest think that seemed to help her was when I got Malachi as a companion. The girls at the ...

Re: Which face is indicative of a healthier chow?

I am a fan of the open face, but then that is just me. Both types are beyond beautiful. Eyes are just one aspect of the dog. Look at both the parents, and find out as much information as you can about their health. Chows have a number of skeletal problems, especially with their elbows and hips. My l...

So sorry to hear about your losses. I would be lost without mine, and it would not be very long before I was looking for another chow. There are too many out there in shelters looking for a home.

Great pictures. Since the first of the year, I have had the harddrive on the laptop fail and then the desktop had to be replaced. I don't think I lost any pictures, but I should have had backup. Glad you got yours back.

Re: Am I being too sensitive?

I am a big fan of harnesses, especially for chow puppies. Ursa quickly showed me as a puppy that she would back up and pull out of a regular collar. The harness solved that problem. I think it gives me lots of control because I can shorten the lead to make the dog walk directly at my side, and in ne...

Re: Our Chow bit my wife

Chows are willful. The whole training thing of "nothing in life is free" applies. They know to sit and wait while I open the door, but I constantly have to reinforce it. Malachi knows not to get on the step at the storm door because he is in the way. He will jump up there all the time. I h...

Re: My chow's behaviour / training

A young chow should learn to get along with cats. You need to stop your dog from chasing the cats by telling him "no" and diverting his attention to something else. My chows do well with the cats, but they were raised with the cats. I have a foster chow mix, and I have been unable to get h...

Re: New Chow Owner - a few questions. Advice much appreciate

I didn't mention this, but start grooming early with your puppy. You don't have to really be serious about it, just go through the motions so that the puppy becomes comfortable with handling. You want to handle his feet, ears, look at his teeth, and handle his tail. The idea is to build trust. At so...

Training, training, training. And training is an ongoing forever thing. Sounds like she is a bit possessive and will guard resources. You have to work with her to make sure that she understands she does NOT have to guard her resources. It is ok for you to pick up the toy and handle it, and that when...
