Been a while. Kuma and Nova say heeeellllooooo!!!

We apologize for having disappeared for the last few months, but things have been a little rough (bad economy, etc.etc.). This past weekeend we got to babysit my 5yo niece as well as my in-laws chihuahua. Needless to say, it was a craaaazy weekend for all of us. The good news is that we shot a lot o...

Re: Berkley Crashes Today

When I saw this thread, this immediately came to mind from your other thread: I have to be very careful with him right now. It occurred to me last night that he went from 0 to 7200 feet in altitude and I've noticed he's breathing a bit fast. Just trying to get acclimated, I'm sure, and figuring out ...

Re: Question about a potential addition to the family..

At 7 weeks old, chow puppies can still have pink spots if I'm not mistaken. What you should be concerned about are the mom and dad chows. If you care about quality, which you do seem to, then I wouldn't pick a pup until at least seeing the mom at a distance. You say they wouldn't let you see her bec...

Re: Diarrhea--again

Definitely take her to PetSmart. I go with my chows there 3-4 times a week to socialized them. All the employees there know us, love our dogs and even give them free stuff, lol. You have to take advantage now because your puppy is in the most crucial development stage and you have to get her comfort...

Re: Diarrhea--again

The 2 big no-no ingredients you should avoid feeding your chow are corn and wheat. They can cause upset stomaches and some are allergic to them, causing itching. When you buy any food/treats for your dog, check the ingredients on the label. They are listed in order of %, the first having the highest...

Re: Clipping the fur at home

I live in the south, where its extreamly humid all summer, and gets between 96 and 110 degrees F. She comes in after a day of play, when she still has her coat, pants for an hour, and spreads completely on the wood floor to try and cool off. I think its safe to say, we should at least keep it down ...

Re: Heat stroke

Personally, based on what I've seen from both my chows, I disagree with your vet. So long as they have a cool place to relax, they're fine. When you take them out for a walk, keep it shorter and at times when the sun isn't blazing (early morning/later evening). If it were only chow owners saying thi...

Don't know if you've tried this site yet: http://dogdetective.com/ Have you tried calling your local news stations? I'm sure they must get a lot of calls about missing pets, but because of the "anonymous" call, it might catch their interest. Here's a recent NY Post article about a stolen d...

regardless of what you were told the Chow was provoked into biting So you're saying no matter what it must be the kid's fault? Was it the kid's fault too when she bit her owner? Sure blame it on lack of peripheral vision... the chow was surprised of course. What if the same thing occured with the n...

Re: Kuma in trouble :(

This is a tough one. How socialized is she? How often do you take her for walks or trips to places where she can meet and greet people? Unfortunately, because a child was hurt, not just physically, but quite possibly psychologically, it's tough to just say "it'll be ok". You really have to...

Re: Are Chows suitable for an apartment life?

Yes, they are. They don't require a lot of exercise, much less in hot weather (heat exhaustion), but it is still needed, especially if neutered/spayed. Exercise isn't the only reason to take them out though. During their first few months as puppies, its crucial that you take them out to meet people,...

Re: A few questions about chows...

Also, my shar pei is the type of dog who follows me everywhere, even to the bathroom. From what I've been reading chows aren't really like that. Or does it depend on each individual puppy? As far I can tell from both my Chows (1yr old and 9m old), yes, they will follow you EVERYWHERE, including the...
