Update on Misiu

As you know, we adopted Misiu from a veterinary clinic in southern Ohio. The manager did not want to turn him over to the local shelter and the rescues were filled to capacity. Now that I look back, the whole thing was very wierd. I mean, I was looking for a Chow or Chow mix for a while when I saw t...

I think I might be able to make it. If so, it would be great. Only a couple of hours away!

Re: So annoyed

Hi, I just had top mention that our chow mis Misiu was with me and the kids when a man came up to us and said "I hope that's not a Chow, because when they they turn to be around 2 years old they will bite you and try to kill your kids. I know because I am a policeman." Fortunately, my kids...

Re: Teaching bite inhibition

Thanks for the post. Misiu tends to get a little nippy now and then, mostly when he gets excited playing, but not always. I have tried to dissuade him firmly, but I think my son lets him chew on his hand when I am not around. I have to stress this with everyone once again.

Misiu's ears are both standing up with increasing frequency. Guess everything in its time, so to say.

Re: Why that name?

When I went to Ohio to pick up the 3-4 month old chow mix posted on this site, the office manager, Patti, said "It's odd, but we never gave him a name." He was with them for at least a month. All the other "strays" they encountered got names - but not him. To me it was an omen th...

Re: Ears???

He's doing really well. He eats great, gets a lot of exercize, and TLC. He's also teething pretty heavily now, so he gets a little cranky sometimes. He's never messed in the house, and goes to his crate without a fight. I guess we're pretty lucky. Everywhere we go, people say "Is that a Chow? H...

Ears???

When I saw Misiu on this website, I assumed that he would have one ear down and on ear up. I felt this was due to his being a "mix", possibly with a floppy eared variety. However lately, I see him with both ears up, chow like, for 2 or 3 hours at a time - then the one falls back down. Has ...

Re: 4 MORE DAYS......

Best of luck. I've had my Chow mix now for 2.5 weeks and he really is a character. He's beginning to teethe now and trying to drive us crazy, but we love him anyway. My trip was about 5 hours and it seemed dreadfully long - maybe because I was alone on the way there. The way way back was a whole lot...

Re: chows and children

I adopted Misiu from a posting on this site. He was never relinquished to a shelter because, as a Chow-MIX, he would have been euthanized-no questions asked. To me, this indicates that he is on par with any pure bred Chow in terms of getting a bad rap, so to speak. The shelter in Warren County appar...

Re: chows and children

Hi, and kudos to you for adopting a chow. I adopted mine only 12 days ago, and Misiu is so well integrated into out family that we can't imagine life without him. I, too, had some trepidations for which I was chastised and somewhat ridiculed by some members of this forum. "If you want a dog to ...

Re: What's the difference?

I like both of these types in their own ways. I just wonder if the closed face type may be headed towards greater accentuation of its characteristics. It reminds me of the EB of today and how many breeders began to developed a 'new' type more true to the original and less exaggerated in feature. Som...

No more neck bones for Misiu

I read some of the posts and decided to give Misiu some raw (almost) turkey neck bones. I wasn't sure, so I only gave him two segments as a trial. 20 minutes later he wanted to go outside badly, where he vomited up the neck bones. :( Lesson learned.

Re: Chows: Do you trust yours off-lead?

After reading the replies and thinking about this topic more, I went out this morning with Misiu (Mee-Shoo) along w/o a leash. He just ran around, followed me, chewed a stick on the side lawn, went to the garage when I started the car. The whole time he never left the property. When I went back insi...

Re: Chows: Do you trust yours off-lead?

Mind you, I have only had Misiu for 5 days now - but each day is a great joy seeing how perfectly he fits into our family. To the point at hand, however. I have a deck that has one side of it facing the side yard, which is unfenced (I live on a corner). Well, Misiu was in the yard and heard my kids ...

Re: need your help

I only would like to second many of the opinions here to the point that at one time everyone was a first time chow owner. By making rescue chow inaccessible to first time owners, those that really want a chow ill resort to puppy mills and the like.

Re: Need Crate Training tips

Thanks for the info. I picked up a book that gives me most of the do's and don'ts. Anyone have a preference for the style and material (plastic, metal, canvas)? Is one type more dog-friendly from a canine point of view? Human point of view? Either style will fit in my van, so I'm not too concerned a...

Re: New Addition to the Family - ended up rescuing a dog.

I am 100% in agreement. And they often play games with you, which can be tough on kids. (see my post 'lost two in one day") I'm in the process of looking for a larger house with an acre or two of land. Will the "Chow Nazis" turn on me if it doesn't have a fence?

Lost 2 adoptions in 1 day.

Adoption 1: Last week I was approved for the adoption of a pup in South Carolina. I sent in a deposit in the form of a check. Later I e-mailed the shelter about times and dates so that I could make some arrangements for a pickup, since I an 900 miles away. Next day, they e-mailed me back saying the ...

Apparently, voicing my concerns about what I read and hear makes me not 'special' enough to engage in an exchange of ideas without some people geting offended. Maybe I'm not 'special' because I care about some kids in my neighboorhood who don't read English well. Maybe, a some have indicated, puppy ...
