I used Pantene Smooth and Sleek shampoo combined with conditioner on my Chow because it takes the knots out of my own very snarly hair and when I brought her home from the shelter she was all tangles and mats. It worked like a charm and I have used it since and it makes grooming go better for her. M...

Doesn't the chlorine in the pool give you a rash?
Freshwater springs are a good way to go, pebbles on the bottom and rapid moving water, no nasty human chemicals.

Yeah, when it's hot, the best way to cool down is to get ones belly in a cold stream and lap the water as it washes around you. Forget the hair-do, that's mom's problem and she's got nothing better to do than groom you anyway. The stream is even cooler than when you dig a trench is mom's lawn to sle...

water

Oh, I love to swim and stretch out in streams and drink while the water runs all around me. Icy cold spring water is the best even in the winter! But don't make me walk through mud puddles or go out in even a light drizzle. My cute little nose was not meant to get wet. And the worst is bath water! M...

A popular human digestive enzyme is "Pancrease" taken with each meal. There are several digestive enzymes in my kvvet catalog (http://www.kvvet.com). Kvvet also has the 5 chamber Cat Mate C50 that we use (item number 80761) and another model with just 2 chambers (the C20) both of which hav...

I wonder if you could introduce the type of device that rotates by a timer, releasing food at preset intervals, ours has a little freezer pack to keep food cood. This wouldn't be like a freshly cooked meal served by hand! Do you think that Tzar would eat it?

I'm just a human doctor, but I disagree with the above information about carbohydrates. They are the least structurally complex of the food groups, the most rapidly broken down and absorbed. This is the reason one gives carbohydrates (juice or candy) to a diabetic is hypoglycemic crisis. I suspect t...

The first 2 weeks my Chow was with me, she sniffed at food and turned away. When I begged her to eat, she'd sniff again and sometimes take a bite to be obliging. I had so many bags of rejected food in the pantry. Cheese of any type (sharp cheddar was my first try) would be always be taken in small a...

Ooh, I had to laugh. My husband was bringing soup into the family room tonight as I came in and asked if I had already eaten my corn muffin. Of course I hadn't had a chance and I'd passed my Chow on the way in to the family room having some stomach reflux and washing it down from her water bowl. She...

My baby Summer crosses her back legs under her while she's sitting like a sphinx with her little black toe pads peeking out on either side of her tail. I really can't imagine how she folds her legs, but the pads are facing up.

Summer, before the clementines, circles around our plates and if they are left unguarded, the purple tongue starts licking around the side getting closer to the target. There is no human food that has not caught her attention, but if I offer fruits and vegetables, she quickly looses interest and goe...

How about if the kitty sleeps in your bed except when you want some romance and then is moved to the bathroom for enough time. That way the kitty will still feel loved, but you can have some alone time. I wonder how the kitty would react if your husband initiated the contact with you; perhaps then i...

Maybe this would help...I put her collar and leash on and get in the tub with her. I put my foot on the leash and that leaves both hands free. I hold the hand-held shower thing in one hand and use the other to shampoo. I work my way section by section thouroughly washing then rinsing and keep the he...

Summer and the clementines

I had to laugh as I read the assertion in another topic that chows are just normal dogs. As I was reading about normalness, my chow, Summer, was standing on her hind feet with her forepaws on the bookshelf, trying to figure out how to climb up get my husband's clementines (like a tangerine). All sor...

Is my Chow the only one who likes catnip? She didn't act crazy like an intoxicated cat, but then she didn't get much because I was afraid that it would make her sick.

The "Animal's Savior" is a very touching poem. It certainly speaks to the despair that we feel at the numbers of homeless dogs. To answer Debbie's question...I had been looking at adult Chows on Petfinder hoping to adopt. It was challenging finding a Chow who could interact well with cats....

tangled hair

Is it just my dog, or do all Chows have a strong tendency to get mats around where the harness rubs? This seems to be occurring even though I am removing the collar when we come in from a walk. Her hair is generally very snarly, but the area of the harness is the worst.

The book "Good Owners, Great Dogs" has given me some ideas to respectfully, and lovingly establish that I am alpha. It has also opened my eyes to behaviors that might seem cute or harmless, but are a dog's way of testing boundaries to try to move up on the pack order. It sounds like it is ...

I wept when I read "How could you?". People somehow view the feelings and needs of animals as less significant than those of humans. To comfort myself, I went and rubbed the head of my own middleaged dog who waited 4 months in a shelter, but when she was brought into a room, it was to meet...

Summer's new thing is looking through the French doors at the cats on the other side who she's been with till coming into the kitchen for a meal. I hadn't thought what it must be like to hear someone elses chow noises for the fist time. We had a technician test our security system (not the chow one, the electric one) today. He let Summer sniff him and then she followed him around learning the trade. As some point he gently asked if she barked...
