Re: What kind of Dog food do you use? / skin problems
If I remember royal caine is not that good. You want to avoid kibble that contains wheat or corn fillers. I use taste of the wild salmon and have not had any problems with hotspots, itching.

Agree with all of the above. If you want to shave your dog get a poodle.

Re: Best foods to feed a chow
It can be difficult find dog food that is both good quality and accepted by your chow. Sd gave our boy terrible hot spots and was recommended by our vet but I am sure it does not affect all chows this way.

Re: Best foods to feed a chow
Science diet is not what I would call premium quality. If you go to dogfoodadvisor.com it will rank the various dog foods available and you should try to stick to 5 star foods but no less than 4 stars. Salmon is also another good source of protein and we use Taste of The Wild.

Re: OVER socialized Chow? Maybe in some cases
Breeding for temperment has been focussed on in the past few years and maybe we are starting to see the result of that. Personally I did not think it was possible to oversocialise a chow. I have sociliased my boy so that he is more accepting of strangers but if anyone were to enter the house with me...

Re: chow coat
There is no need to trim a chows coat and I always tell my grroomer no trimming. The coat will grow back but you need to be carefull with sunburn until it does as there skin has no protection for this at all.

Funny but our boy wont drink from the steel ones. Only heavy ceramic type. Also need to change water almost daily during summer.

Re: Cross country road trip with chow puppy
I have had no problems with my chows travelling whether they were pups or adults. A puppy that young will be nervous travelling to start with and you have to manage that. A crate would be a good idea and plenty of rest stops. Having that this would not be an ideal way to bring a puppy into your life...

Re: Chow Chow color
It is nice to have a choice though. When picking up your puppy you want to try and support the spine as best a possible. Get them use to it now and it will be easier when they are adults.

He is a big boy. You would not get too many intruders with that lot around.

There are light reds and dark reds and he would be light red and maybe cinimon. Dark red tend to have a very dark coat as pups.

And also try ciobears kennels. I think they will be having a litter first half of this year. They have the coolest male chow.

I can recommend tsulin kennel in vic or sherae kennel. Both our boys are from tsulin and our friend has show quality chows from sherae.

Re: Desexing question?
I fully support desexing but there is quite some debate about doing it too young. From what I understand desexing affects there hormone production which during the growth period, say up to 10months, the puppy needs for proper muscle development etc. Also on males the testicles dont descend umtil abo...

Re: Desexing question?
Choose another breeder. There is no way an 8 week old puppy will be due *Censored Word*. There are varying thoughts on desexing but somewhere between 5-12 months is normal

After trying many brands we have also settled on taste of the wild. No more hot spots and coat is much better. I was not aware they had a recall though? When was this?

Re: Jumping...how high?
Depends on how they are built. The short legged stocky chow has trouble jumping but the long legged athletic chow will jump as well as any othe dog for its size. I agree that they should be able to run, jump and play like other dogs but they do seem to lack stamina.

Geez if that had been my place they would missing a limb by now. I had a women show up at the door collecting for a charity and I was outside at the time. My boy was lying in the bathroom on the tiles where it is cool and did not hear her knock. She slid the door open and yelled if anyone was home. ...

Re: Chow pup having trouble getting up continued....
Fully agree. My original advise to the OP was to get the hip end elbow score for the breeding parents at least to get some idea of what is going here. Select your pet chows based on health and temeperment and not the show ring.

Re: Chow pup having trouble getting up continued....
Why dont you tell your vet just to go ahead and x-ray the hips. Dont worry about the anestethia, he is young and will be fine. Just do a search on here about it so you ask your vet the right questions.

Re: A Run for My Money!
The laziness remark can apply to a lot of dog not just chows. People think they can go to puppy classes and suddenly the dog is trained. Obedeience training is for the owners benfit and not the dog. I does take a significant amount of time to train a dog and some things are just not worth it. After ...

Firstly it is not normal fo r chows. Secondly find another vet as it sounds like entropian. This is a serious condition and can lead to blindness.

For hip scoring the dog must be unconscious and they do stretch the legs but maybe for severe HD diagnosis they dont need to do this.
