Welcome to the site. I love coming here, but sometimes it's hard with all the work I do. Your Max looks just like my Avis. She will be one year old on April 27th. She is also quiet and nice to people. However, right now we are in a new house, so she is constantly barking at all the "strangers&q...

Hey everyone, I know I've been gone for a while (moving). Anyway, your problem sounded a lot like Avis' at the same age. In October she was about 5 1/2 months and she had the same symptoms. Potty trained since August 17th, then all of a sudden she can't hold it anywhere. Foyer, stairs, sidewalks. It...

Well, all's over and I think the verdict is: Avis really was in heat. I think being as young as she was, she may not have been prepared for the changes (just like little girls), but you could tell the symptoms were the same. I'm glad all is over and we will be making a visit to the vet in the next f...

I make sure I have a lot of treats on hand to train Avis. I notice that she does things when she feels like it, not because she wants my approval. I just incorporate commands into every day tasks. For instance, Avis "sits" for everything: Going out the door, in the door, when I come in the...

I know five months is early, but various web sites and books say that bitches can go in heat "as early" as five months. I take it that it's not common, but still possible. The penny dropping has eased but she's still a bit swollen. She's listless--meaning as nonchalant as she is usually, i...

I'm not too sure about the color. I just finished my mopping for the morning, so it's all gone. :? However, she is VERY SWOLLEN where she pees.

Thanks very much...I was still a little confused. No accidents since the day I took her to the vet (Wednesday I think), but I'm still a bit worried. I guess if I knew "for sure" what it was. I keep going back and forth--maybe it's a urinary infection, maybe it's heat. Shrug.

Five Months and Already in Heat???!!!

This has been a crazy week for Avis and me. On Monday, I thought she had that "*Censored Word* sac" problem that I had just happened to read on the net. On Tuesday evening, I came home to find she had gotten past her makeshift gate and went upstairs. Urine on the floor and "*Censored ...

I use the pin brush on Avis, but also use the bristle brush to make sure there are no "small knots". She's still a puppy; do you recommend just using the pin brush?

Well I guess if you go that route, than there are a rainbow of different color chows. However, from what I have read (and my experience), most different color chows are mixed somewhere along the breeding lines OR they have been tinted by the sun.

There are no brown chows. There are red, cinnamon, cream(white), black, and blue. The blue chows sometimes get tinted by the sun, so they look brown or chocolate. Cinnamon chows will start off dark in color (like dark grey), then start lightening up. Cinnamon chows' snout match their entire fur, whe...

Hey Leo is the cutest puppy and color I have seen. He looks just like Avis when I first got her (cept for the color). Even though I had her pedigree, I wasn't sure about her being purebreed because her eyes weren't slanted and she wasn't "poofy". Now, she is starting to really fluff out (w...

When I first got Avis, I used a regular harness lead and that was terrible. She was walking one way and I was walking the other and pulling, tugging, etc. I started using the choke collar, but didn't like to use it on short bathroom breaks (but she was still pulling with the halter on those trips). ...

That picture of Scooby is cute, but he is a red chow. Cinammon chows will not have the dark snout. Red chows start off beige in color, then turn red as they get older.

Avis (pics)

Hello everyone, I've been lurking on this site for a bit and just had to post some pics of Avis. She's a red chow (self-red, I think), five months old and of course, she is the sweetest dog ever. This is her at about three months. http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/2754/avis11weeks18lbs0146zt.th.jpg...
