Re: Hip Displasia :( ...(update: Surgery DONE)

So glad to hear that! Thanks for all the advice...my baby turned out to not need hip surgery, her cruciate is what is causing her problems. Now that the palate reduction is done and she can undergo the long anesthesia for the CCL repair we are hoping to have her fixed up soon!

Re: New to site

Welcome! You have all the requirements needed: love of Chows. The rest is really trial and error on this board. I would just click around and read through some posts to get acquainted with the layout. It's pretty user friendly.

Re: new/old Chows ignoring each other

Ok, you're not going to believe this, but just hours after I posted this I found the answer to my problem. I have not attempted to groom the new Chow since he got here, wanted to give him a few days to settle in first. The girls got heavily groomed two days after he arrived. Today I decided that he ...

Re: Chow rescue in Texas?

Yes, you are correct. I used to be very involved with WTCCR when I lived there, and most of my babies have come from Linda. They do a lot of good work. I was just afraid that someone might see this thread and not realize they are currently doing rescues again. I just wanted everyone to know that the...

Re: Chow rescue in Texas?

I know that this is a little old, but West Texas Chow Rescue IS still doing rescue, just on a reduced scale. I just adopted my latest addition to the family from them in June 2011.

new/old Chows ignoring each other

I have adopted many Chows before, but never really come across this situation before. Usually when I adopt a new Chow, the Chow I have either loves the new one right away and they are fast friends, or hates them and it becomes a training issue for them to just get along. I have never encountered a n...

Re: Pemphigus Foliaceus

Our beloved Zilla had it. As Merlin said it came in cycles, sometimes he would go half a year without any issues, other times it would come and go for several months at a time. We tried several different drug combos, but the only one that seemed to work for him was pred. At first we used it just whe...

Jacqui,
Please forgive the lateness of my post...I don't get on this site a whole lot these days.
I am so sorry to hear about Kai. Please accept my deepest condolences! I know how much you love you babies-it's so hard to say goodbye!

Re: Zilla had to leave us...

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. It has been really hard for us, Zilla was such a special guy and we have been spending so much time with him and caring for him so much in the last six months. His passing has left a huge whole in our hearts. We do find much peace in the fact that he i...

Re: Accupuncture

I can honestly say that Acupuncture (along with so much love and a fabulous vet) is all that kept my Zilla going in the last few months of his life. Nothing else provided the pain relief or relaxation that it did.

Zilla had to leave us...

We had to say goodbye to our dear, sweet Zilla Tuesday night. The last six months his arthritis has gotten increasingly bad. We have tried every NSAID and non-NSAID combo out there without any real improvement...they didn't work on him like that did for Tango. The only thing that gave him relief was...

Oh Jerilyn, I’m so sorry. This is the first time I have signed on in a few weeks, and I was so saddened to see your post. I know that you have brought such love and joy into all of your Chow’s lives, and I know that Cinder was so happy and blessed in her life with you! I don’t know what to say to ma...

Re: Accupuncture

Hi Shawn, I feel your pain-we've tried one thing after another with Zilla and nothing really seems to work well. Acupuncture is the only thing that remotely helps these days. We give him metacam, but I'm not really sure it does anything. When we take walks (which the vet wants us to do) it takes him...

Re: What causes fatal bloat?

Immediately after Missy passed away my vet told me that despite many of the ideas about feeding, most cases of bloat are caused by a genetic predisposition and there isn't anything I could have done (good or bad) that would have necessarily altered what happened. He then told me that they can do a p...

Thank you all for the kind, loving words! I know she is without pain or fear now, and running free and playing with our other Chows who are already at the Bridge. I find great comfort in that. Thank you!

We lost Missy to bloat today

I came home from work and she was breathing but unresponsive. We've had another chow 14 years ago that survived bloat, so I immediately suspected it when I saw her stomach. I rushed her to the vet and they diagnosed bloat and were able to release the gas from her stomach with a tube. They were prepp...

I'm not sure about the beds, but when we lost Tango it seemed to help Zilla to sleep with his head on her bed and smell her scent.
I am so sorry for your loss!

Re: Lack of urination-how long is a problem?

Hi All, Thanks for all the caring thoughts and everyone checking in on Zilla! He is doing much better now. The vet thought it was the switch-over from Pred to the other medicine that caused him to stop urinating. She said to watch him until the next day, and if he didn't go then to get him right in ...

Lack of urination-how long is a problem?

Zilla has urinated twice since he came out from under two different sedations in less than 24 hours. Both times it was about 24 hours between the times he urinated. We flushed his system with an IV on Friday, and since then he has been eating and drinking, but drinking less than usual as he is off h...

Thank you both for your kind thoughts and words. It has been a roller coaster since I last posted. That night I was sure I was going to lose him. I slept on the floor with him, as it seemed to comfort him. It was a heartbreaking night. In the morning we took him to the neuro/ortho specialist, expect...
