Re: muzzle
It depends if there's any need to. As for which muzzle, I've always been told that the "cage" type is kinder on dogs as it allows them to pant, rather than just strapping their mouth shut like a fabric muzzle does.

Re: "You don't want a Chow Chow. They're not nice dogs."
I think Chows are much like any other breed - some will get along with cats, others won't. I have a Chow, and a cat, and it's not a happy combination. Xhena grew up with the cat around, but she found it's far more fun to chase cats than be friends with them (every walk at the mo ends up as a cat hun...

Re: How big will she grow?
She sounds about right to me. At that age, Xhena weighed 23.5kg/51lbs, though I can't recall how tall she was. Now, at 19mths, she weighs 26kg/57lb and is around 20" tall, which seems to be around the same size as the other Chows we bump into.

Re: My Chow Puppy
We're in the UK too - Xhena came from a breeder in Warwickshire. She has always slept on the laminate floor, I've bought all kinds of beds for her and she's never shown the slightest interest in any of them  It sounds like he's going to be a big boy, Xhena weighed 5kgs at 10wks. She now weighs...

Re: Recall.
Yes! Coco comes back to me when I call her! BTW, how is Xhena doing? Have you managed to re-teach her a good recall? Nope  She has been on a flexi lead for the past couple of weeks and have been working on getting her to come back. Yesterday I let her off for 5mins so she could play with anot...

Recall.
A thread I posted a couple of weeks ago got me wondering, how many people on here would say their Chow has a reliable recall?

Re: Where has her recall gone?!
Oh, boy...sounds like the true chow personality is coming out. But I want my nice Chow back   The odd thing is that her commands are normally fine, if I ask her to sit, lay down, stay, give paw, etc, she will do it no problem, even without bribery! It's just recall, both when we're out ...

Where has her recall gone?!
Now I love my Chow to bits, but she is just so frustrating at the moment  In December '08, I started letting her off lead at the park and she was great. Good with the other dogs, came back when called, no problems at all. This continued through January and February, taking her to the park was ...

Re: Photographing a Black Chow
Natural light is your friend. If you can get a pic either in front of a door or window, or better yet, take the photo outside, you'll have the best results. I agree with that. I take the majority of photos outdoors during daylight hours. No flash, ever, and always try to make sure that the sunlight...

Re: Chows and Feet!!
Bella doesn't lie or sit ON our feet but she often sits near them though she does have a strange fetish for licking our feet. it's a little weird sometimes do anything to get at your bare feet, strange girl... I thought Xhena was the only one  We don't dare to have bare feet in our house at ri...

Xhena in the snow!
Thought we'd make the most of the dumping of snow we've had here and take Xhena to the park. Apologies for the quality of the pics - must get myself a new camera. Re: Help
Xhena HATED car rides when she first came home - now she loves them! It took a while, but we made sure that every time she got in the car, it was a positive experience (for us, getting in the car meant going to the park, and the only time she went to the park was via the car). It won't take him too ...

Re: Just curious
Sounds just like my Chow  The only thing Xhena barks at is the occasional cat, otherwise we just have odd huffing/snorting noises. She's also fine with anyone coming into the house. We had a workman come in a few months ago, she followed him everywhere he went, tried to climb in his toolbox, th...

So proud of my girl!
After some encouraging words from someone I met at the park on Thursday (who owned a husky), I decided to bite the bullet and let Xhena off lead. She's nearly 15mths old now and is really starting to listen better, so gave it a go. In four days we've been the park three times, all of which were off ...
Re: Harness
I'm not a fan of Haltis unless they are necessary - with Chows they aren't. I have always used a normal body harness with Xhena as I was worried about her slipping out of a collar.

Re: Chow or not? Advice needed.
I'm in the UK too. Providing your chowling is brought up well as part of your family, aggression really shouldn't be a problem. My girl is now nearly 15mths old, and I've yet to hear her so much as growl.
Good luck with him!

Re: Sporn Non-Pulling Mesh Control Harness
I bought one of those for Xhena months ago. Nice design, but not good for long haired breeds. You'll find the fur on the back gets snagged in the harness when it tightens - it pulled more and more fur out until I refused to use it anymore.

Re: How to distract her from other dogs?
Thanks for the replies. She is generally quite good when there are no distractions around, but i guess while she was a pup I let some things slip that I shouldn't have done. I've really started to crack down on her behaviour, and it does seem to be improving - we'll see what happens next time we see...

How to distract her from other dogs?
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could advise. Xhena has always loved other dogs, she's never nasty with them (she's 13mths old and I've yet to even hear her growl), but she always HAS to say "hi" to every dog she sees, and is very in-your-face with them. She forgets all about me, sets he...

Yes, I was looking on a website earlier at harnesses, to see that they had used Chows for models in three photos! That's in the UK too - I was amazed!
