Re: Acts like her rear end is hurting.

It was a skin infection under her tail. She's on prednisone and antibiotic and needs to be bathed in a $27 bottle of prescription shampoo. That's it.

Re: Acts like something is hurting her rear end.

It's a bit more with Zeena. She's obviously in pain because she whines and growls and acts like she going crazy. I did notice yesterday that there seems to be a bump at the base of of her tail and it could be a boil or cyst that's aggravating her. I'm taking her in to the animals hospital this morni...

Re: Acts like her rear end is hurting.

Looks like she might have a cyst or boil at the base of her tail. I"m taking her in today. Maybe they'll lance it. She's suffering with it.

Acts like her rear end is hurting.

Help, I have an 8 yr. spayed female Chow who has recently been turning her head side to side whining, yelping and acting like her rear end hurts. She's been to the vet and they did a full blood test on her and the only thing that turned up was a little anemia. She's been wormed too. So it can't be w...

Acts like something is hurting her rear end.

Hello, I'm at my wit's end. I have an 8 yr. old spayed female who has been to vet, had full blood tests. Vet examined her rear end and didn't see anything wrong. But there IS something wrong. She turns her head and tries to get to rear end, pulls hair out, yelps, whines like something is hurting her...

Re: female attacks male for no reason

Yes, that makes sense to me. Never looked at it that way. She's trying to impress. Luckily, she always goes for the neck and not his face. He has a pretty face. He also has a very thick mane. I've inspected him and she never does any damage, maybe a ding on the head once in a while. I break it up fa...

female attacks male for no reason

I have a 6 yr. old female Chow and a 7 yr. old male Chow. Don't know why, but the female will attack him sometimes for no reason. Sometimes, maybe it's jealousy and asserting her alpha female position. But, she'll see a cat and go after the male. i broke many fights up and it seems by now at their a...

Re: Life Span of a Chow

Thanks so much for your input everyone. So, it looks like my Chows may live to 15 IF they stay healthy. As your Chows get older you do think about this.
And yes, you NEVER forget your first Chow. I have pics of "Chevy" on my wall. He was a great buddy.

Re: Life Span of a Chow

I have two more Chows, one is 6 and the other 5. It was terrible losing "Chevy". But, I got a Chow pup, Max and then a year later got Zeena, his half sister. I just started thinking about it as they are getting older now. Thanks for your reply! The vet says they are very healthy so maybe t...

Life Span of a Chow

Hi Everyone,
My first Chow lived to 11 1/2 but he had health issues too. He had a brain tumor. If you go on the internet you
get all kinds of answers. 15 years, 8 -10 years, etc. I can't think of a better source to answer this question than
the Chow Chow Forum.

Re: Jerky treats

I won't give my Chows any treats made outside our country, never will. You can't trust the quality of food made outside the U.S. If I pick up a treat that looks interesting for them, the first thing I do is see where it was made. Not U.S.? I put back on the shelf.

Max talks to me in grunts

It's too funny sometimes. He'll be laying there and I'll pet him and talk to him and he starts grunting like "Arnold" the pig in Green Acres (if anyone has seen that program.) The breeder who has 5 females and one male said Max's mother grunted too. Does anyone have a Chow that grunts to t...

AKC Registered Chows, unique names

Both my Chows are AKC registered and AKC likes the names to be unique. Since Max was very aggressive when he was a pup I named him Max Braveheart Bower. Zeena is Zeena Sheba Bower. I've seen the name spelled Xena but wanted it to be spelled like it sounds. I thought the two first names were differen...

Re: chows as sloppy drinkers

Max is a neat drinker, but his half sister is another story. She "slops" it up and while here mouth is still full of water walks away drooling all the way. It bugs me pink. But, that's how she is. Still love her.

Re: Chow vs. pittbul

There are some BIG pitbulls, I've seen them, over a 100 lbs. But, I haven't seen too many that big. Zeena is black and fights viciously. She's 65 lbs. and has taken Max, her brother down more than once. Max is big boned and weighs 70 lbs. She had him in a death grip one day and he couldn't get out o...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

Hello Everyone, This is my last reply on this subject. The behavior may be "ingrained" but, the hormones enforce that behavior. I've seen it myself. Zeena would be DEAD by now if I hadn't got Max neutered. DEAD. That is the way he was, OUT OF THE GATE, as a puppy. Now, he's the nicest goin...

Re: Dog on a Brooklyn ledge

I know, it sounds like Chows aren't that afraid of heights? Maybe something new I'm learing about them? But, if theyr'e not afraid, they then can get themselves stuck in the situation. Someone once said that Chows are NOT like other dogs. Isn't that the truth. Quite different in many ways. Viva la d...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

Max was a ALPHA male ALL the way. He humped everything he could hump and did it ALL the time!!!!!!!!!!!! He wanted to kick eveyone's butt right out of the gate. He wanted to kill the vet, he was only 5 months old!!!!Then he was neutered and it took a little while but, he changed. Now, I would trust ...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

True, i agree. Supposedly healthy for them and may even live longer. But, it's drastic. I've seen my Zeena in a lot of pain after she was spayed, she was 6 months old. When I was picking her up, the vet saw the pain she was in and gave me pain pills for her. Max had pain pills too when he was neuter...

Women, unsympathetic towards neutering

It's true but, they won't fess up except in other ways. In a way, I can understand that, since they don't see this experience in a "personal" way. How could it be "personal"???????????????? "No big deal." Yeah, no big deal, I was upset for about three weeks after Max go...

Re: Dog on a Brooklyn ledge

Great Chow, could see that right off the bat. Why? I've had Chows for a while. He had a sweet personality and that boy needed to be rescued. He was ready for it. Pretty, pretty Chow. The fireman who probably doesn't know Chows, won't eat anything when they're in distress. I praise the fireman. Big t...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

BALONEY, dont' tell me it won't change their personality. I've had two male Chows, one not neutered and one neutered. Max was an ALPHA male even as a pup and even the vet told me that he was an Alpha male when he was maybe 5 months. Now he's a whimp. Any dog could beat him up. Chevy was my first Cho...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

I'd say it's too late to neuter him now. I think 6 or 7 months is the latest. Some people have their pups neutered at 3 months, that's too early. To tell you the truth I had Max neutered at 6 months and regretted it. When I picked him up at the vet's he looked at me like "What did you do to me?...

Re: Can I leave a chowchow puppy home alone?

I've always looked at crating as cruel. I just can't help it. I tried ONE time to crate one of my Chow puppies. He went absolutely nuts in that crate. So, I took him out and that was the last time. The only time I can see crating necessary is when they are being shipped by plane. No choice there. I ...
