Mindy finds a new home

This weekend, two years after we lost our "Baby", we brought home a new rescue. This little girl is named "Mindy". She's a 4yo Chow mix that has had her life drastically uprooted and turned upside down in a matter of a few months. She and 3 litter mates were left in a box at Adop...

Re: "Baby" - April 1997 to March 2010

Thank you to all for your kind words. We are still adjusting to the hole in our home...the places we can walk in a straight line now, having to eat all of the french fries, not having to go walk her first thing when getting out of bed, not seeing her head pop around the hallway corner or give one of...

"Baby" - April 1997 to March 2010

This is our rescue Chow Mix "Baby" She's now about 11.5 yrs. old and is a favorite of our entire family - extended and otherwise! She's a diminutive 20" at the shoulders and 34 lbs at her heaviest! The beach is her favorite place, although she detests getting in water above her ankles...

Re: Cirrhosis of the liver

Update: 3/19/2010 Well, Baby has taken a turn for the worse. She had a random seizure 2 months ago on the lawn while going potty. Not a flopping one, but a collapsing one that made us completely freak out. After doing some research, it looks as if she had a seizure because of what is called Hepatic ...

Re: Cirrhosis of the liver

Thanks all for your responses! Like I said...if it were the Jack she's really good at hiding those bottles. If it was infectious hepatitis (which can usually be cured in dogs with antibiotics) then who KNOWS when she could have picked it up or from where, since it's highly communicable and doesn't s...

Cirrhosis of the liver

"Baby" was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in February of this year. How long her liver had been dorked up, we don't know. Why it was dorked up, we don't know. Was it infectious hep that never was found? Was she really partying with St. Bernards every time we left and hiding the bott...

Re: New Minimally Invasive Cruciate Ligament Technique

We chose to do that type of procedure for our dog on both her back knees. She also tore her meniscous, so they had to remove them. She did heal very well and very rapidly with both knees, but her ankles are now a bit rubbery and starting to hyper extend due to the straighter knee position. We did us...

Re: What's going on with his coat???

If it's not a skin condition, have them also do a liver panel... that can cause coat issues as well.

Re: Need to change nikka's diet

My friends who have been feeding their dogs raw diet of meat for 12 years have one fast day every week. So, 1/2-1 cup of raw meat, veggie & grain mixture in the am and half a turkey neck in the evening. Then on Sunday's no food, to help mimic the natural way of feeding in the wild. Seems to work...

In Memory of Grommitt

My mother-in-law just sent me this email. I haven't shared it with the hubby or our Chow "Baby" yet, but their dog Grommitt had to be put down today. They are an older couple, who have had Grommitt a Chow mix rescue in their home for many years. I met him a few times on visits to S. Cal, a...

Re: Martha's Chow Paw Paw passes away

I remember meeting both Martha & Paw Paw at the Westminster Kennel CLub show in New York back in 1999. She was so proud of him and just gushed when we were talking at the judging ring. He seemed very laid back in the kennel area, even with all the people milling around. I am sure that even thoug...

Our "Baby" has had surgery on both legs, and yes, they shaved her to the skin. Although it takes a long time for the hair to grow back (I hate the Ugg boot look), it does eventually grow back. She goes through a lamb stage, but then it all comes back in. Since she is a mix, we can get away...

Here's one of the few family portraits we have! I usually am the one running the camera - thank goodness for tripods and timers! This is at our favorite beach - Ocean Shores. We usually keep "Baby" on a 30' leash so she can run but mentally, it keeps her from running off completely. http:/...

Our "Baby" was beaten with a brush on a regular basis during her first year, so we've always had a challenge getting her groomed at home. She's been fine for groomers- actually goes into full shock and trembles the entire time and they all love her to death...but at home she would snap and...

yes kingalls.... she is! And that's at her heaviest... she's a mix so who knows what the other part of her really is to keep her that skinny.. The people who originally had her purchased her from a guy who said he didn't know who the father was, but thought it was either a Golden or a Coyote. (They ...

I have some pals who have been feeding all their animals a completely raw food diet for 12 years now. I use their recipe with added supplements for our Chow Mix and give her a small amount in the am to supplement her dry food. She loves it and eagerly guides me to the kitchen after her morning walks...
