Re: Stating my opinion, let me know yours

Saskanechi: Chows are not a breed for everyone and there are alot of erroneous pieces of information about Chows out there in the public realm, and sadly even amongst veterinarians. That being said, there is a long and comprehensive article, entitled Don't Buy a Chow, that gives an indepth view of w...

Dscipula:
Try contacting Cindy Green with Central New York Chow Rescue. She is a Chow breeder, exhibitor and a wealth of knowledge. She may be able to recommend a vet in your area that is Chow aware.

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

And for whatever it is worth, there is no age beyond which it is not safe to neuter a male. And the "frustrated" male arises because there is a bitch in season somewhere close. No male dog will suffer from not siring puppies. However, an un-neutered male can suffer health issues simply by ...

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

Do have a chat with your vet regarding what to look for in terms of testicular and other *Censored Word* function problems. Unlike humans, an intact male dog beyond 4 years of age can be prone to problems if they are not used in a regular breeding program.

Re: To neuter or not to neuter

According to much of the current research into speying/neutering, 24 months is the ideal age. The body has completed development but it's usually soon enough to prevent other intact-related issues. A change in personality is highly uncommon, although the younger the animal is neutered (under 12 mont...

Re: Desexing question?

The following is a somewhat belated yet apparently necessary response regarding puppies and breeders in Australia. 1. There are about 25 registered breeders in the entire country of Australia. Those registered breeders produce, on average, about 100-120 registered puppies per year - that is in total...

Have you contacted Elizabeth Simpson of Tsulin Kennels in Ocean Grove? She operates the Chow Club of Victoria's rescue / rehoming program... Also contact Dogs NSW & get the Chow Club of NSW contact person's details & talk to them - they occasionally have rescues needing new homes. Cheers, Ju...

Now: Chows & hypomelianation

Hi Sam, Hypomelianation is an uncommon disorder and the mode of inheritance (it is thought to be autosomal recessive) and the frequency of occurence in dogs has not yet been established. All that has been established is that it does occur in the Chow (frequency of occurence is low/rare) & that t...

Re: Chows, oldest breed in the world?

Hello again, Did a bit of futzing around in some of my on-line research sites and can find absolutely nothing to supercede what I had written previously, however, there is a bit of an expansion on the "oldest" breeds, which number 14 and include: Afghan Hound Akita Inu Alaskan Malmute Base...

Re: Chow Chow question

Hello again, Thank you for posting the picture of your girl. Unless the colouring in the picture is off, I suspect your girl is a fawn/cinnamon rather than a blue. Fawns are also dilute and if there are other dilute puppies in the litter, that she is a dilute, albeit a fawn (possibly will be a "...

Re: Chow Chow question

Chows can have pink tongues, but it is not desired. It does NOT necessarily mean that the dog is a mix breed. It is NOT a genetic fluke, but it is genetic, in that it usually comes from lighter pigmented (tongue pigment that is) bred to lighter pigmented dogs somewhere along the line and is not at a...

Re: puppys

My experience with Chows (nearly 40 years including time showing & breeding) is that they get the majority of their growth between 9-11 months, but they do continue to grow very slightly more til they are about 18 months. They actually don't physically finish maturing til they are about 3-4 year...

Re: Chows, oldest breed in the world?

Very quickly, in zoology there is an ordering system for all creatures. One order is that of the Carnivora (flesh eaters). One suborder is the Caniforma ("dog" like) and includes the family canidae (woves, dogs, coyotes, foxes & jackals) and the family ursidae (ursine - bear); extinct ...

Re: Question for those who show chows

As Sam says, an agent is the handler - not always a heavy duty pro, but a paid handler all the same. Pauline tends to only handle Chows on the West Coast. Bill McFadden is one of the more prominent handlers out there and tends to show any and all breeds that he thinks has BIS potential. He has a ver...

Hi Melanie, Well done to you both. This is such great news that Khana is working so well. Doesn't Khana come from Zola? If I recall correctly Zola has another girl, a cream girl, whose call name I think is Moxie, who is also a service dog. Her human has worked with her for her (the humans' needs) as...

Re: A Question about a growing Chow

As a breeder, while I recommend/prefer my puppy buyers feed a raw diet (it's part of the health warranty conditions), nevertheless, I recommend to anyone who asks to NEVER, NEVER, NEVER feed puppy formula... Puppy formula is formulated to encourage growth in pups. However, Chows are amongst the smal...

Just a quick editorial update: Finn's name is actually Senge Fionn Mac Cumhaill (pronounced Finn M'Cool). He is named after a legendary 4th century Irish warrior chief. He was born on 10 July 2008 to Ch. Bluelord Sakura Shokyu [aka Pippen] (Dam) and Ch Sherae Star Cruizer [aka Cruiz] (Sire) and as S...
