Re: Urgent transfer/pull needed for Chow in NC to MI
I just got a reply from someone in NC that can help pull and vet him. Once he's quarantined, I'll have 10 days to arrange transport for him. Thank you for the suggestions!

Re: Getting another Chow girl!
Thanks everyone! I closed on the house yesterday, and we will begin working on it this weekend. The fence should be up in a week and Allie should be here on the 18th. I can't wait! There is so much to do and not enough time (or money) to do it all! I would love to take a week off, but it's not an op...

Getting another Chow girl!
I know I haven't been on in awhile, but I will try to get involved again. A lot has happened and is happening. At the end of January, Brian and I broke up. A week after that, I made the decision to put Cash, our English Setter, to sleep. He was barely functioning anymore and couldn't get up on his o...

Re: Malting/Shedding/Blowing
He is probably blowing the rest of his puppy coat. Nothing to worry about, just keep him brushed. He will grow in his winter coat in time.

Re: Funny Chow habits
Carter has the tendency to lay on his back and kick me in bed. He also likes to go roll around on the ground outside, whether it be in snow or grass. He likes to talk when he's excited or wants something. He also loves to back his butt up to you so you will scratch underneath his tail curl. The list...

Re: Names...
Carter got his name because we had our English Setter, Cash first. I liked the idea of pair names, and so after much deliberation, we settled on Carter. (Johnny Cash and June Carter). His middle name, Simba, was in memory of Frisco Simba. Frisco was named when we got him, after a soap opera characte...
Re: bathing?
And do not bathe him weekly. This is too much and could dry out his skin, even if it is a puppy shampoo. NEVER use people shampoo, not even for babies.

Re: My chow pup cracks me up everyday
My aunt's dog (they were told Chow mix, but looks Samoyed), would/will throw her empty water bowl at you when she was thirsty. I am not sure if she still does it, as she's getting older now, but she used to. It was so funny!

I don't believe Belgian Sheepdogs are supposed to have black tongues. I believe it is just meant that they are allowed black spots. Many breeds can have black spots and not be Chow or Shar-pei. Chows, Shar Peis are the only AKC breeds allowed to have solid black tongues. Chinese Foo Dogs and Eurasia...

Re: Any suggestions
Natural shampoos, Oatmeal ones are generally most gentle. As far as drying, for a Chow you should have a high velocity dryer. A regular human dryer would 1. take FOREVER, 2. Must be on the Cool setting or you can burn them. You can not let them air dry or they can/will get hot spots from being wet o...

How about a theme of rescued or adopted Chows? (Seeings how that's where mine came from :P) Maybe with a little note on where they were adopted from or what kind of situation. No offense to the ones from breeders, but I think that would definitely be one I would like to buy. I didn't end up getting ...

Re: Chow mix shedding undercoat and top coat
With the Golden in him, he can shed some of his top coat, as Goldens do. I would really only be worried if the area looks balding or thin enough to see his skin through after pulling some off. (I am a groomer). Inside dogs shed year round since they are in a more climate controlled environment which...

Wow, I had never read anything like that about Previcox before. Frisco was on it for a good 2 years or more for arthritis and Hip Dysplacia. He never had any problems and actually felt better on it, but I guess we were lucky. He died of an enlarged heart and fluid in the lungs at the age of 13.5 yea...

Re: Arthritis
My old Chow mix, Frisco, was on Glucosamine Chondrition tablets with MSM (from WalMart or Target). Those take a few weeks to build up in their system, but then you will start noticing a difference. He was also on Previcox, a pain blocker, daily. You could always tell he felt better after taking one....

If it just started coming out in the beginning of summer, it will grow back for winter. It is their seasonal shed.

Re: Chow second coat of hair
How old is your Chow and what is your weather like right now? They will shed the soft undercoat, which leaves mostly the top coat. Weather and age play a big part. If it's consistently warm, they will shed more because they don't need the insulation. Once they hit about 6 months or so, they start to...

Re: chow pup and small dog pack
I adopted Carter as an adult, with no knowledge of his history with any other animals, and I got lucky. He started off being afraid of our cats, now he pretty much ignores them. Every once in awhile when he's in a zoomie mood, he will kind of do a play bow to one of them and even pretend to pounce! ...

Re: Chow Chow Spider
I have finally decided what my boys will be for Halloween. I always take my dogs to the Howl-o-ween Party at PetSmart every year. I try to have costumes that not everyone else would have. Most of you have probably seen Frisco's past costumes. He has been Eeyore, a black, Army Dog, Adult Simba, and a...

Re: Why did you get a chow?
My family's first and only dog (Frisco) was 1/4 Chow (or maybe more). He always made you think Chow before either the Shepherd or the Husky (thankfully :P). He was an awesome dog who we all loved and adored. For most of my life, he was one of the only dogs I really knew aside from a few family membe...
