Re: Snapper Chow, biter chow, agreesive chow?
With our puppy we used a lot of time-outs. It helped MUCH MORE than any other kind of punishment, no, nose spank, yelling, or anything like that. Focus on positive reinforcement rather than negative, but if you need to, I'd suggest time outs. The second My puppy bit me I would say, ''No bite." ...

Re: chow don't want to be touched - help please
Another thing I thought about: How much did you prepare him for his vet and groomer's appt? If you can go to your vet and pick him up yourself. Go into an exam room for 5 minutes if you can. Go without an appt and just sit in the waiting room for 5 minutes. Gradually expose him to more and more at t...

Another thing to consider is seeing a different behaviorist and different obedience classes and play groups. If someone just suggests you give up then you need someone who is committed to helping even if it's a tough job. I don't think you should just 'give in' and accept that you have a problem cho...

Re: Pong just turned one...question ab food
I don't know what's right or wrong and I'm definitely no expert on the subject but, our vet recc'd that we stay on puppy food for a year and then switch over. I've never heard anyone that recc'd staying on puppy food for a year and a half other than special circumstances (such as Victory's slightly ...

The treat bag was the best party bag I've ever seen and definitely Penelope's favorite too!

Blue Wilderness
Hello everyone, Have any of you tried Blue Wilderness food? It's seemingly good quality, grain free, no by products, relatively good ingredients. What I'm wondering is if a high protein diet is ok for a chow chow. Are high protein diets good? Will it change her energy levels? Hope to hear what you a...

I read that the dye is usually either food coloring (so non toxic and made for human consumption) or kool-aid. So, because I assume it's safe, i just think it's super cute. Plus, some dogs (not mine) LOVE to be groomed and pampered! I have the secret fantasy to one day do my cinnamon chow with tiger...

Re: new family member Riko-Cahn(xbreed)
How big is her cage/kennel? I've read that the right size is only just big enough for your dog to stand and turn around, but not TOO big. I assumed it was because if it was smaller then it'd feel less nest-ish. A dog won't want to eliminate in their little cave / bed / nest. Also, how old is rico-ca...

Re: first-time chow owner questions
I agree w Victory. Whoever is the main caretaker is who the pup should live with. When we first got our chow pup my bf and I lived separate as well, spending weekends at his house, and he saw her almost EVERY NIGHT WITHOUT FAIL. He'd come to my place after work and leave late into the night and we'd...

Thanks to everyone for your kind words! We're all really glad she's back too! Yesterday (her first day back home) her entire attitude was SO changed! She's usually really spunky, sassy, high energy, vivacious, and downright wild. She'll only cuddle on her own terms and if I try to go sit down with h...

Re: eggs
I once took penelope to the vet with some pooping problems, after a round of normal tests he said it could just be an upset stomach and to feed her white rice and scrambled eggs. He told me it settles their stomach?
If my vet rec'd it it can't be that bad, right?

Sometimes there are things that only other dog lovers, especially chow lovers can understand. When my bf and I go to work we drop off Penelope at his parents' house because they have a big yard she stays in all day while if we leave her at our apartment she's confined the the bedroom all day. Well, ...

Pet Insurance advice
Hey everyone! I had a couple of questions about pet insurance and was wondering about everyone else's experience! We are working on getting pet insurance for Penelope, who is just over a year old. She's up to date with all vaccines and has already been spayed, so it isn't the costs of those things t...

A poem about chows
For years I've been a complete fan of the poet, Pablo Neruda. For those that don't know him, he's a South American (Chilean, to be exact) poet that died around 1970'sish. Most in America know him for his political poetry but spanish readers also know him for his romantic poetry as well. I discovered...

Re: No Ca Bay Area Boarding Recommendations PLEASE
I know a lot of people are really picky about where they send their dogs and I may seem bad for it: but we bring Penelope to The Wag in SF all the time. You can go in, tour the place. The downsides: The dogs all pee and poop in the big playroom they have. I've never SEEN any of it when I'm there dro...

Hey all you chow lovers! I'm looking for a diagram or picture of a chow chow skeleton! I tried to google it and came up with nothing! I'm in a class about drawing animals and we're supposed to pick a breed of dog and do sketches of their skeletons/bone structure and their muscles. Given that chows a...

Thank you everyone for your advice! It all sounds good. Penelope's vet appt. is today to clear out any medical problems. Hopefully everything is clear on that end. But :( The hard thing about the training part/changing our habits part is that we live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I hesitate to leave her...

Hello everyone! I always feel so bad when I'm really busy and chow forum neglectful and then come back with a problem. But here it is, Penelope is now around 8 months old. Re: adopted from a show and breeding kennel
My sister's chow will often not eat all day if she's left by herself. And so when we'd get home we'd put the food in the living room with us and after we had all settled in she would only just start to eat. Every chow is different with wanting to be left alone or needing company. You can also try mi...

And don't forget how warm your heart feels when you see those beautiful chow eyes looking up at you.
But you're right, it's saying good night and then good morning every day, sharing the day, that makes happiness!
