Recovering ears

My chow is getting over a nasty ear infection  and, I was just wondering how I may go about keeping her ears cleaned or rather how do I clean a chows ears safely? It's been suggested to me by the vet that this may be caused by allergies. There was no yeast present in the ears /:) and, sh...

Re: bad food reaction to Purina Beneful

I own a red female chow and I tried her on the Purina Beneful. She loved it to begin with. :D She gobbled it down in one sitting. However I started to notice she was scrating more and developing hot spots. I went to my pet specialty store for some advice on what type of food to change ...

what is the possible cause of drop ears in a chow

I have a question: What causes drop ear in a chow? I've heard that it maybe related to a zinc defiecency. I've also posted on this site about how I could get the ears to become erect. Some replies suggested shaving the ears and, some taping them. Well these all failed. I'm wondering if it may be gen...

Re: Nutro food scare!

Hey there, I just started my dogs on Nutro, a switch from purina proplan. I have noticed that my dogs turn there noses up at this product, especially my Chows. Even my Labrador Retriever who just bolts down everything in sight took a second look at this stuff. The Lab started to get diarrhea and the...

Re: Heat stroke

Thanks to everyone for all your replies. =D= I thought that shaving her wasn't the best option. #-o Hindsight is 20/20 though. :( I'll just have to be a better advocate for my Chow in the future. By the way she's a beautiful red Chow. :D Thanks again to everyone. :)

Heat stroke

Hello Everyone, my Chow Chow recently suffered a heatstroke and had to be hospitalized for a few days. While in the hospital she continued to run a temperature because of subsequent infection caused by her sloughing the mucosal lining of her stomach secondary to the heatstroke. Anyway the Vet sugges...

differences in chow type

I've been noticing differences in different chow chows. I have one chow that looks more like an alaskan huskie where the ruff is more abundant around the neck and shoulders. I also have another chow that looks like a minature lion but the muzzle is more bull dog in appearance. On looking at differen...

re: hip dysplasia

Hello everyone and, here is my question. I have a 5 mo. old chow chow male. When I bought him at 9 wks. old I noticed that his gait was a little off. I should have paid more attention to it because I also noticed a funny gait in his 9 yr. old father. I loved him anyway though and, purchased him and ...

Hi to all, I'm wondering if there's a watering hole out there that is more chow resistant. I have several plastic ones currently but, my chows love to chew them apart. Are there any that are stainless steel or ceramic that can be purchased? I haven't been able to locate one. Can anyone give m...

How to teach to retrieve

I have a labrador retriever and a Chow Chow male. Naturally the Labrador Retriever loves to play fetch. I would like to teach my Chow Chow to retrieve as well. Re: rough and cracked paw pads

My Chow Chow, Nanuk has rough and cracked paw pads. She's limping on one leg and I was wondering what I can do to alleviate the problem.
I was using vaseline on her paw pads after grooming her. I've heard of people using bag balm as well. What do you suggest?

Re: aggression

Referring to some books about chows and interactions with other dogs, "it seems chows have a peculiar odor, or sweet smell that aggravates other dogs". When you take your walks I would carry a good spray repellant, preferably of the citronella type so as not to make the offending dog more ...

Hello, I've recently purchased a chow chow male. He is about 12 weeks old. He has drop ears that aren't erect as they should be. He has an older brother whos ears aren't erect either. Hi Zoey, no this is not a common problem in chows. Pet stores are the last place that you would want to purchase a puppy from. Try a reputable kennel or breeder for a sound chow puppy. Puppy's with problems like yours are the result of breeding unhealthy stock and should be avoided. If I were you I ...

Doggie treats

I'm having trouble getting my chow interested in doggie treats. :( I've tried bisquits, and soft meat chews, but she just turns her nose up at them. :( I would greatly appreciate any input because I'm beginning her on clicker training and I need a good response from her regarding the treats.
