Re: Very Itchy--Could Cause Be Blowing Coat?

Seasonal allergies, or food allergies.
You could ask for a cortisone shot, which normally lasts 8 weeks ( if the scratching is very bad), and if it is bad, ultimately it could get infected, and then you'll have a problem on your hands.

On the other hand I worry that it would be completly irresponsible for me to keep him and even try and train him because I always have children around and it is a big chance to take. What is truly irresponsible, is you assuming that Mother dog should be training Baby dog how to properly interact wi...

Re: Get 2nd Chow Chow Pup??? Any advice?

I'd like to toss in my 2 cents if you don't mind. Getting along with other dogs isn't the same as living with one. Has your female ever lived with another dog for any length of time? If not, then yes, you really do need to take things into consideration. The reasoning behind splitting genders is tha...

t Cushings as well, Markers would show up in the thyroid test and in the simple blood test. if the dog had Cushings there would be significant hair loss, tearing of skin, appearance of sores "out of nowhere"... there are generally other signs that accompany Cushings or Addisons. The test ...

Please have her checked for diabetes or thyroid - and have her bun/urea checked for possible early signs of kidney disease.
That's what we would do with a dog who would demonstrate the same symptoms

Re: Wanting to feed raw, but little helpless

Hello KJ Feeding raw means feeding a multitude of meat and not just chicken. In fact, if you live in the USA, chicken is one of the most inflammatory meats you can possibly give to a dog ( or a person), and is best left on the shelf more often than not.. I'm not saying it's the case in your case, bu...

Re: Please help on my chow's diet

Most dog breeds love meat, but Chow Chows have a sensitive skin. Consuming a lot of meat may cause skin problems which will damage their coat. Sorry! This is the biggest load of crock ever put into writing. Dogs, and chows included, are hard wired by Mother Nature to eat meat, meat and more meat. T...

wouldn't mind it at all if Muslims adopted a 21th century mindset on animals sooner rather than later. Outside of 1st world countries ( North America, Europe, Australian, etc), there are MANY countries where dogs are not idolized the way we seem to think they should be - and it has little to do wit...

Re: Feeding and pooping schedule

We wanted to establish a pooping schedule because we want to time it when we walk our chow. Dogs eat... 4 hours later.. they poop. It's nature. People often place very unrealistic expectations on their dogs. Let me ask you something. Do you do that with yourselves? Train yourself to poop at specifi...

And sometimes when you are really near the door of the cage he will try to bite as if he is protecting something. He also looks nervous. It's more than possible that this is separation anxiety, possibly mixed in with territorial anxiety. I don't know if you've ever seen a dog that won't allow visit...

Re: Bravo raw diet

A raw diet is fresh meat that you buy at the store or at a butcher or at an abbatoir. Raw food shouldn't be "processed". Bravo is a commercial raw food ( which by the way was just recalled) that is "processed" - it is no different than commercial kibble. If you are considering st...

a 1 year old healthy chow, if eating quality food doesn't need any supplements whatsoever, :) FYI it has been scientifically proven that glucosamine is only effective if combined with chrondroitin. On it's own it has no measurable effect. Glucosamine is also "glucose" - SUGAR - and that co...

Re: Should I shave my chow?

Chows are noisy dogs by nature ?????? I'm not sure where you get that one from. The only noisy chows I know are chows with overdone heads, elongated palates and stenotic nasal canals. Most chows that have a properly done head with a proper muzzle are not noisy at all. Chows are generally very steal...

Re: Should I shave my chow?

One of the proven scientific reasons not to shave your chow is because the dense coat protects the skin from UV light. If you take away this important protection, you open up a door to many potential unwanted illnesses including auto-immune disorders and/ or cancer. So if you do decide to s have you...

Re: Chow eating poop...

It's easy. Just don't allow your chow access to areas that contain fertilizer. Fertilizers often contain extremely high amounts of nitrates and other poisons that are harmful to your dog and could actually send your dog into kidney failure. If you know for a fact that there is absolutely nothing els...

Your dog biting you is a clear sign of who you are to him. At 1.5 years old this dog should have been educated by now to have a valuable recall, so that you don't have to leave a lead on him to bring him in. You also have no business picking this dog up to move him from one place to another. Another...

Re: Chow chow blindness

In fact it's quite common because the breed often suffers a genetic fault called entropian, ( where the eye lashes are turned inward and rub on the actual eye), and if not properly treated, entropian leaves scars, ulcers and trauma on the eye that results in blindness of varying degrees. In fact, it...

Mother Nature doesn't lie. If she wanted dogs to be vegetarians , she would have given them teeth that can crush cellulose and intestines long enough to process cellulose. Dogs have neither, Nor do they have the teeth of omnivores like bears do,. They have the teeth of a carnivore..... so... they ar...
