Re: Chownapping protection

My hubbby's Uncle was a Captain of a Large Sea Barge and would travel the world. He saved a chow that the crew had on board from China and brought it home. They named her Suey as she was set to be Chop Suey. Anyway, they had 2 burglars in their house one time when they were out and Suey chased one o...

Re: Jack Black

Hey Guys, we used to live in NewWest with Maggie until she was 8. We called her "Queen of the Quay", as that is where she hung with all of her doggie friends. Is that Buntzen Lake? Nice to see another Lower Mainland Chow here!

I'll post some of her NewWest pics on another thread.

That's fascinating. We used to take Maggie to the Aquarium and they have an outdoor viewing window area for the Harbour Seals. Maggie would run back and forth at the window, as they would swim by and the seals were interested in her as well.

So sweet - it doesn't matter how old you were, once a chow is in your heart, they are there forever.

Thanks everyone. I am glad that I took video of her, I love remembering her little ears and the way they twitched and turned as she listened to everything, along with the little cowlicks of her fur on her soft sweet face.

I hope you got through the holidays OK. It is one year ago this week that Maggie got sick and died, so it has been difficult for us as well. We toasted her and walked her favourite walks.

Take Care

This guy is a dope. He is a human psychologist who has just tried to make a name for himself. He is just a good self marketer using the popularity of dogs and his list to make a name for himself, but there is no real knowlegde of dogs behind it. His knowledge is extemely superficial as are his lists...

Mel, I would like to do better by my chow the next time. I need more knowledge and skills to do that. I attended some puppy training classes with Maggie, but stopped going because they wanted me to spray her with water and use a choke (on a puppy?) because of her stubborness. My instinct told me tha...

When we got Maggie at 4 1/2 months she growled at everyone that was less than 20 feet from her. She had not been socialized very well at that point. It was at that point that I realized that this was going to take some work and that included having her accept everyone. She was getting better a 6 mon...

I have a more naturally incharge, no nonsense type of personality. I don't know if I am a strict alpha per say, I prefer a strong competant leader at work, but if none is available, I will step up and take the leadership role, but anyways... From the time she was a puppy I always let Maggie know wha...

I have heard of owners of large kennels culling (killing) in the 80's, chows that were not going to be bred. I also heard of one Canadian breeder that thought that a good temperment test was to not socialize, but rather leave them in the kennel with limited human contact. If they were aggressive aft...

IMHO When a chow has the responsibility of deciding who is and is not OK, then their stress increases and that in turn increases the stress hormones which can cause them to be less tolerant and this interaction can escalate the behaviours. You are doing your chow a favour by not putting them in the ...

That's a great idea. Even better if the Breeders would come on board and be active participants and they could use it in the promotion of their kennels. I am sure it makes good breeders crazy that anyone can breed a dog and there is no differentiation between what professional do vs. BYB in the eye ...

I hate to be a broken record... but another case where someone has very important information to share that could save many others the same problems and there is not universal place to share it. I think a breeder BBB is the way to go.
