Re: Male Chow (adopted 8/25)- San Francisco CA
Yes...Thank you, I talked to them. My home is not a good fit for that particular chow -- I'm still looking for the "right fit" -- a senior chow without major health issues seems to feel right...kinda like his or her new mom... I have two tie outs that I used with BearII when he wanted to b...

I would need help getting him here...and he would have to get used to doing his job of guarding the house while I'm away during the day...do you think its out of the question? I keep comi...

Pam...thank you...its going to take awhile ...I'm just devastated...I wasn't prepared [is one ever?] -- but I'm feeling today that, having spent the night with me last night...he's moved on this morning and fully on the other side now. He came home with me last night though...we were both confused a...

Re: My chow will let no one touch her!!! Please help
I understand this dilemna completely. I empathize. I've had Bear2 now for a year and a half, a rescue dog as well whom I was told was 3 yo, actually 5, now like 6-1/2 yo. His hair was all shorn when I got him. I'm not sure it was ever allowed to grow out. His hair has grown back but the its like the...

yeah...I'm learning the incremental/patience approach with Bear too. He's growing his fur out finally, and he's looking pretty ragged where it hasn't. The matts are biggest on the backs of his lower legs, and since he has one leg that he really doesn't like to have touched, its ...slow work. He like...

Alaska Chowfest!!!
Okay. No more excuses. I'm here. When are we having it? I know it'll be small but who cares?! *smiles* I know Bear will love it! I've already suggested having it down here in Homer at Bishop's Beach...where we can walk and talk, have as big a bonfire/campfire as we want...camping spots for RVs are n...

Well Ladies and Gentleman and Honored Chowlings: I MADE IT! Without mishap or misadventure, and it only took eight days! The hottest days were on the east coast. Once I got to Thunder Bay, the wind blew the hot the heck a way, and the rest of the trip was in the 70s, even including when I got to the...

I think we live in a fear-based society anymore. People FEAR rather than look, feel and deal. My cats are a perfect example of what is possible. Every dog I have ever had MUST get along with the cats. I don't expect miracle right away. It takes time for everyone to get to know one another, and TRUST...

Great ideas Jennifer/Juniper (sounds like an old Donovan song!:~))...I will check it out tomorrow. It'll be a little hard to keep things frozen after the first 24 hours on the road... but the water bed thingy...as long as claws didn't spring it... between the two cats who I WILL let roam around once...

My last weekend in this cabin, at a friend's for two weeks while I work some more, then we hit the road on the 16th. I should be in alaska a week later if all the gods are with me! I think Bear is going to be fine on this trip. I've got a carrier for the two cats to hideout in. I've got the food and...

They have some amazing meds these days for dogs with that kind of pain that will make his life more bearable so keep the faith. My Bear2 has some sort hip thing going on that only seems to affect his right rear leg, but really, the whole hip system the vet said is stiff. She said I don't need to wor...

Missi ~ I don't know you but I feel like I know what you are going through right now. Only time will make that exquisite pain go away, not the memories! I'm glad you had so much time with Precious... you had twice as much as I had with Bear(1) and no Being will replace his special soul. I know Preci...

Salandra ~ That's a great idea!!! I have no AC and that is the issue in my eyes...but, as the vet said, I will be carrying lots of water to drink, and cool bottles for him to lie on, and of course, taking all the detours to ponds and lakes and rivers as possible without making this 4500+ mile trip e...

thanks J72, layla and Jeff... It all makes sense to me as when I first heard it. Chows are from a rather warm climate, or can be, and it makes sense that there is a certain adaptation that has occurred. I make an effort to keep Bear2 brushed, though his underbelly is still not as accessible as I wou...

shaving vs not ~ prep for prairie heat en route to AK
Some of you know that I am moving north to Alaska in a month or so, in the heat of the summer. I will eventually get to where Bear2 will be golden, but on the way, prairie country is inevitable, no matter the latitude. I am taking the northernmost route one can, but still, having travelled it coming...

canine happiness
No matter the pet, dog, guinea pig, cat, bird... it is my belief that will be happy if it is appreciated by caring for it and loving it in combination. Specifically regarding my Bear2 and all those sweet canines that preceded him... my connection with them, my talking with them, feeding them, groomi...
