Re: Salmon Oil & Coconut Oil for Chow Chow
We've given ours a couple of squirts of salmon oil every night with their food, and have done this for years. They have gorgeous, full coats! Whether or not it actually works is anyone's guess, but I'm not going to question!

Re: Shy and Bashful
So, we had our first private session the other day and, I must admit, it went pretty well. Sunni responded WAY better to the trainer than she did to me, but I can get over that. Eventually... So, now we're working on "Come" and "Wait" and "Let's go..."

Re: Is snoring normal
Our Tempest, whom we lost last spring after nearly 14 years, snored like you wouldn't believe. I could be on a telephone call and people would ask what that noise was. I actually liked it, and really missed it after she went to the Rainbow Bridge, as I called her my own personal little "white n...

Shy and Bashful
OK, so I realize that this is an atypical problem, but... We recently adopted a 4-year old female Chow, Sunni, and she is the shyest and most bashful little girl on Earth. She has turned a part of our living room into her crate (she was crate-trained and spent a great deal of her time in a crate pri...

Re: Chow puppy with pink nose?
We just adopted a 4-year old cream chow (nearly white) and her nose is pinkish-gray. She was shown once, as a very young puppy, then her nose began to lighten, which, of course, ended her show career. As we lost our Tempest last spring at the age of nearly 14, following a long illness, we were fortu...

Re: My Little Lilly
You know, I haven't been on here for ages (out of "work" busy, not because I don't care about all of you), but it's always such a joy and inspiration to hear about Lily (and, Tess). For some reason, it always brings joy to my heart...

Re: Chow chow blindness
As I mentioned, many dogs are prone to canine glaucoma. At one point, Chia was on 18 different medications and eyedrops PER DAY. It was not fun. But, when they're a member of your family, nothing is too much. She never suffered from entropian, but we have had a chow since then who did. My biggest co...

Re: Chow chow blindness
Our first girl, Chia, developed canine glaucoma, which as we were told, is not unusual in chows, shar peis, and some hound varieties. We actually caught it quite early, at the first visible sign of onset, which merely consisted of tearing and a watery eye, we had her at our vet's that day. We ended ...

Re: I'm so glad i didnt give him away
As time goes by, you'll be happier and happier that you didn't give up on Thor. I remember when Emperor Ming was a puppy (our first chow, Chia, we got when she was 1 year old and she was perfect) and he was, I guess, a typical puppy. I remember being on my hands and knees with a wet, soapy rag in on...

Re: Kodi is a Big Boy
I remember going through the drive-through at the bank one time with Chia in the car next to me and the teller mentioned "Oh, wow, what a beautiful chow! I have a chow at home, but he's much bigger. How much does yours weigh?" Well, we had just left the vet's office and I'd weighed her, so...

Re: Louie's Story. RIP "Monkey* 10/06-12/12
I read this several hours ago and burst into tears reading about you and Louie. I'm glad by office door was closed! There was truly a special bond between you two, as there seems to be with any good Chow parent, and the loss was made worse due to the circumstances. But, so many of us have been there...

Re: How do you move on when your chow passes?
When we lost Chia, our first chow, to cancer, we were devastated. We had Emperor Ming and he truly went into mourning for his "big sister." Several months later, neither of us had said anything about getting another girl, but we were out walking Ming one evening and, for whatever reason, w...

Re: Extreme shedding...Is this normal?!
Our first chow didn't really blow her coat to the point it came off in clumps, but she was really good about her daily brushing so we got it all along that way. Tempest, however, can walk along during "coat blowing season" and clumps of hair just fall off of her while she's walking, and I ...

Re: Choke collar vs. regular collar
We use choke collars when walking them, but they never wear a collar around the house. Ming's leash has a nylon tether that goes around his head and connects to the chock collar and we've never had any problems with it. Tempest, on the other hand, wears only the choke collar with her leash on walks,...

Re: I Miss You Chloe!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had various dogs in my life, but until we got our first (of many, hopefully) chow, you just can't understand the depth of feeling and love they are capable of. I loved every dog I've ever had, but there's just something about a chow's love that's entirely different. Ours are now approaching 12 ...

Re: Are your Chows TOO protective?
We actually have a very sophisticated computer-oriented alarm system, but I always laugh when I pull into the driveway if Ming and Tempest happen to be out in the back yard, they'll run to the back gate and just stand there and stare at me. Rather than Chows, I refer to them as Chews (Chow early war...

How very wonderful for you all!!! I have always admired and enjoyed the stories about you and your Tess, always thought there was a bond that would, somehow, go on forever. Now, with Lilly, you have a new bond to make, never replacing or severing the old, just adding to it. Congratulations to you bo...

Re: Jumping...how high?
Ming has NO problem jumping onto the bed, but Tempest can't. She'll try everything, from just running and jumping to standing and jumping, all to no avail, she just kinda hangs there. Ming, on the other hand, will be standing perfectly still and all of a sudden, he'll hop up onto the bed (most likel...

I've never quite understood why it's always little yappy dogs that seem to be the most vicious. I remember being out walking with Chia, our first chow, one time and something little rat dog came over and kept lunging at her, I told Chia to "Eat it, sweetheart, go ahead and eat it" so she k...

Re: Is Your Dog a Thief?
Tempest steals my white tube socks. I can put them up and she will climb up to get them. I can stuff them into shoes and she will get them. During the night, she'll find them wherever I've put them. She chews on them and I swear I haven't got a single pair of white tube socks without holes...
