Re: Questions to ask a chow breeder
The first thing I would want to know about the breeder is why they are doing it, and for how long.

Re: Chow Chow Breeder Websites
I'd though about the Facebook angle. I guess I am "old:" I don't really use FB much, or any social media for that matter. I guess you could also chalk that up to my bit of Asperger's ... socializing is not something I do as a matter of course.

Chow Chow Breeder Websites
Since losing my boy yesterday, at some point I will probably want to get another Chow. But one thing that's always bugged me is the poor quality of most breeders' websites. Like if I go to chowclub.org and clik on a link to one of the breeders listed, the site is poorly designed, horribly out-of-dat...

He's convulsing. He's crying. He's throw up a few times. I called the vet, and made the decision I've been dreading.

Re: At My Wit's End
No sooner than when I start thinking about long term health care, that my beloved Dim Sum has a very bad night. He was visibly uncomfortable, and his eyes ... well, I don't think he has much more left in him. As I type this, he just let out a whine that I've never heard him do before. I was contempl...

Re: New Chow puppy/DCM/water in lungs/anemia
Chows may be sedentary dogs as adults, but puppies are not. While my boy did nap quite a bit when he was a puppy, when he was awake, he was very energetic. In fact every evening he would go ballistic, literally bouncing off the walls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-vMCIzTZs4 Did the breeder you g...

I never imagined that the day would come where I would be thinking about a dog wheelchair, or having to learn and express his bowels/bladder.

Re: At My Wit's End
We visited a neurologist today. I was hoping for but not really expecting a different answer. He could undergo an MRI, and possibly surgery to restore his ability to walk, but she thought the chance of a successful outcome would be very remote. If I choose to not euthanize him I will need to clean u...

Re: My Poor Sick Baby
Wish I could help you. I was just told on Friday that I should put my dog down, so I know what you are going through. I myself am taking my boy to another vet for a consultation and second opinion before I make another, possibly final decision. Good luck and best wishes to you and BooBerry from me a...

Re: At My Wit's End
Last saturday while I was at work, my sister said he threw up a couple of times, and was lethargic all day. Since then, he hasn't been able to stand up on his rear legs. I noticed he seemed to have no control over his rear limbs at all. He couldn't wag his tail, and he couldn't control his bladder o...

Re: At My Wit's End
He has not been on prednisone long; they do think he has some kind of immune disease. I hadn't considered or even thought about a holistic vet; otherwise, he just started getting acupuncture treatment. I have been giving him supplements for his joints (glucosamine) ; is there something else for dysp...

Re: At My Wit's End
Unfortunately, an answer is not forthcoming. If I had a pile of money I might be able to find out, but that is not the case. I don't think it's his time yet, but his body is breaking down at a rapid rate, and even though I am hopeful he can pull out of it, I'm not sure he can. At least he is eating ...

At My Wit's End
I haven't been on the board in a few years. My little boy just turned nine on Sunday. Late last year he started developing a problem with his left eye; it would get all goopy. Then while on a long road trip back in February-March, he started getting an ear infection. Also, every once in awhile and o...

Jumping...how high?
I know Chows aren't built for jumping. They are built all wrong for it. But Dim Sum has surprised me. He's always jumped into the planter at a shopping center where I walk him. The brick work is about two feet tall. Now he's gotten into the habit of jumping up onto a concrete ledge about 30 inches t...

thanks for all the replies guys. if she really have sammy in her, I'd still love her the same. Re: I thought he was gone....
I would recommend going to a true sport store where they carry climbing gear or look on line, you need a carbinor that won't freeze and then snap in half in the cold. I would think that the ones used for cold weather climbing are different than the ones used for other things. +1 Most carabiner clip...

I just read some news stories about dolphins being shot and stabbed, and a monkey at a zoo who suffered a killing blow.

Re: Does Your Chow Frog Dog???
Tell me how could that be good for there Hips...Its not...we asked the surgen that did Mias FHO surgery about it and they said they would make sure our Male didnt do it..because it could do damage to the hip I suppose I can't argue with a surgeon, but my thinking was that flexibility is a good thing.

Re: Does Your Chow Frog Dog???
I have always wished Dim Sum would do that; I think it's super cute, and maybe even good for a Chow's legs(?)
When he was a puppy, he did one leg a few times, but that's all.

I don't know where you live, so I don't know what is available in your area. But here's a good place to find reviews and ingredient lists for most dog foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

Re: My dog food ok?
It's good that Salmon is the first ingredient, but it's bad that the next meat is fifth on the list. Once the water is removed from the salmon, the second and third ingredients become more important, and in this case the second ingredient is brewers rice, and the third canola meal. I'd consider thos...

Re: Grooming Tools HELP!!
I use a clipper, scissors, comb, pin brush, slicker, dematting tool, and nail clippers. The comb gets the most use by far; it's my go-to tool. I only break out the clipper and scissors once a month, when Dim Sum's fur gets ridiculously long. Mostly it's for his paws, but I trim the feathering on his...
