Inner ear hair removal; yes or no??

I know on many other breeds, groomers pluck the hair out of the inner ear, but it seems like they do it mainly on long eared dogs. Does anyone here pluck their Chows' ears and if so, how do you do it?

Re: Emma's limping, but no pain; why???

Thanks for the reply; she has actually stopped limping and seems perfectly fine again (well, other than a sore neck from fighting with the neighbor's German Shepherd again yesterday!).

Re: Emma's limping, but no pain; why???

What did the infection look like? I've been looking and still don't see or smell anything unusual with that foot. Recently, she did lauch off the deck to see my partner, Dave. The deck is three steps high and she used none of them. I'm hoping maybe it's a sprain. Still, this morning on the way downs...

Emma's limping, but no pain; why???

Emma's now 5 years old and has always been as healthy as a horse. She runs, jumps off the deck, does stairs, jumps on and off the bed, etc. with never an issue. Today, however, I noticed she is limping and sort of babying her left rear leg. I've looked for cuts or injuries on her foot pads, flexed a...

Possible Food issue causing ill stomach?

Emma is now almost 5 and until now has had only a handful of issues with vomit and poop. She's been eating Call of the Wild dry food with a couple tablespoons of their wet food mixed in (she loves the wet and tolerates the dry). I noticed that Call of the Wild recently "improved" the flavo...

Nobody likes an unhappy Chow!

I can't get that line out of my head from Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. Well, I have an unhappy Chow. Emma's 4 years old now and "bored". Yes, I'll take the Chow's share of the blame, but I'm in a bit of a time-bind. She gets to be off-leash in the yard several times a day (2.5 acres of yard,...

Re: Stop!

Funny, I call Emma "NASCAR" on the stairs because no matter how far up them you are, she has to run up past you and get there first! On the way down, however, since the stairs are wood, she's like an old lady. She takes one step at a time (in the middle, of course) until I touch her bum wi...

Re: Eye goop / discharge questions

Here are a couple pics of her eyes yesterday. As you can see, her lower lids are very saggy, but are not normally, unless she's tired. So, we have ectropian eyelids, but look at how pink they are. I'm thinking she may have doggie conjunctivitis. I bought un-preserved saline to flush her eyes until t...

Re: Eye goop / discharge questions

The other thing I noticed today is that both lower lids are drooping at the edges. Sometimes she does this , but today it's very pronounced and the tissue exposed is very pink.

Eye goop / discharge questions

Ok, Emma's 3 now and I just took her to the groomer's on Tuesday. Since then, the "eye boogers" she normally gets seem more pronounced. They're not streaming down her face, but the are bigger and the color is a tannish / puss color. She's not in any apparent discomfort from them, but I don...

I need sure-fire games for bored chow

Emma has never been overly into games, but she's getting bored due to the snow and cold. She does not play with toys, especially if they squeak. She'll do a round or two of fetch, but then gives me a look that says, "this is stupid, I'm bored." She will play with her treat ball if there ar...

Re: How lazy is your chow??

Ok, Emma's either lazy or smart. I stopped buying her big Milkbones, because she would just sit there with it in her mouth, whining. I would have to break them up. So, now I get the small ones, but occasionally, when she's "not up to it", she brings it over and drops it in front of me to b...

Re: How often to bath a Chow?

Emma gets a bath only when she stinks (if we go to the beach and she decides to go in up to her chest) or if she has laid in a mud puddle (a favorite of hers). She has a couple favorite spots to lay when she's outside, and one is very shaded and "moist". Needless to say, when she comes in,...

Re: Nelly's nail cutting DEASASTER !!!!!

Emma gets her nails done whenever I think they look too long. She did not like it at first, but I won the battle. I sat on the ground, laid her on her back in my lap, wrapped one leg over her belly and sat there until she stopped flailing. Then, I touched the nail with the clippers, waited for the f...

A little pee-pee surprise (2 yr old Chow)

Well, I happened once before, but I never thought anything of it until it happened again today. Emma was laying on the sofa next to me, sleeping while I watched TV. After a while, she got up and moved off the sofa. As she did, I noticed she dribbled a bit of pee as she got up and walked off the sofa...

Wheezing has started

Emma is now just over two years old, and within the last several days, she has had a couple very short wheezing attacks. It's hard to describe; it's a quick wheeze/snuffle that's enough to make her sit up, but it's not a sneeze or followed by a cough or anything else. She's as active as ever outside...

That's a great photo!! I think they all do it; Emma does the same thing sometimes during the night at the bottom of the staircase. It looks like she fell down the stairs when you first see it. I've never been able to figure it out other than to think that they're "airing out the Netherlands&quo...

How do you break "the staredown"??

Ok, I love Emma, but we've got some work to do. If you read the post on "Emma goes psycho over sharing food", you'll begin to see what I mean. Well, her intensity about unstable dogs is too much. Max is a big, cross-eyed, and rather dumb German Shepherd owned by a friend. For some reason, ...

Re: help! my chowchow has curly hair under his chin

You said he's 4 months old? He's still in his puppy coat, so give it a while before you go crazy. He's got a ton of shedding and growing to do in the next year. Keep it managable, but don't obsess over it. Think of it as a Chowlick!!!

I want Emma to see other Chows in the Mass/RI area. We are south of Boston and about 30 to 45 minutes from the Cape, Boston, Providence, etc.

Anyone planning a walk or get-together?

Re: My 15 year old chowmix wont let me clip his nails

Any luck with the clipping? I'm going to assume you're a woman, so this might be harder to do. I'm a guy and when Emma fought me over her nails, I sat on the ground, flipped her on her back, wrapped a leg gently over her belly and waited for the squirming and flailing to stop. I held the paw and cli...

Emma goes psycho over sharing food

OK, I love Emma and she's been a great dog for the past two years, but now we have a major issue. Picture this...for the past year and a half she's been ok with other dogs, but didn't see many unless we were walking or at an event. She's very good with all people (kids, adults, bicyclists, joggers, ...

Re: Is Your Chow Trained???

For those of you who have them trained, how the hell did you deal with the walk?? Emma refuses to walk beside me; she has to be up front or she'll die (I think that's what she thinks). I used the prong collar and it kept her close, but I hate it. I bought a Halti and she keeps pulling the nose strap...
