Re: Berkley revisited-Warning
I don't post often but I will post to this. Everything that gets posted on the internet becomes public content. Sorry - that's how it works. It's not this site, nor is it the mod trying to get you. Google stores flash images of everything that is ever posted on the internet. It's how their search en...

Re: Benny has moved to the Rainbow Bridge
Jerry -- I am so sorry that Benny has crossed. What you did with and for him was magical. I remember when you found him. I am sure Rogan has found Benny and showed him all of the shady spots. Run free Benny.

Judy & Fred - I am so sorry about Milly's passing. It seems like all of the dogs we've known over the years are getting together now. Rogan will keep an eye on Milly for you.

Re: Vet visit - Good news.
We did the same thing with Rogan four years ago and it worked like a charm. I highly recommend going this path for chows. With Rogan, he trusted me to not hurt him and I was able to give him the therapy he needed to help him heal.

Re: Louie's 16 week vet appt. So Embarrassing!
Rogan never got over his hatred of the vets office. And we switched vets 4 times in his life. Thankfully, the vet we went to for the longest (in Rochester, before we moved) 'understood' him and worked with me. They had no fear of him. Down here, we finally went with a mobile vet who would come to th...

What is she allergic to? If it's not cheese - use cheese. If it's not chicken, use chicken. Stuff like that. Something that she will ONLY get for jumping into the car. Somewhere along the lines, she decided that driving in the car is BORING. You need to show her that it's fun and worth her while aga...

Re: How much money would you spend?
I am so sorry to hear about Scotti's turn. It sounds like the hospital is doing everything they can. To answer your question, I think for us, the deciding factor has never been the money but the quality of life. If I knew that I had a chance of getting the dog back with a good quality of life (for u...

Re: HELP - maxine found a kitten
My husband is allergic to cats, always has been. That being said, our kitty - Dasher -- will be 14 in November... There are steps you can take to avoid inducing an allergic reaction. You can pet the kitty, immediately wash your hands afterwards. Erik's ok as long as Dasher doesn't decide to s...

Re: Would you or Could you.
My .02 for what it's worth. Having trained several dogs to titles in obedience, one of which was a chow, I can say this. Dogs learn from their handler as much as the handler learns from the dogs. Training a dog is more like becoming a symbiotic partnering. You each learn to read the other's r...

Rogan has passed away
Last night, Rogan passed away. We took him to the emergency vet because he was panting excessively and drooling - just generally not normal. Within 2 hours, we found out that his stomach was distended with air, he had a body temperature of 105, there was a mass in his abdoman and his lungs were prob...

Re: Mystery Fever/Infection
I am so sorry your chow is going through this. Is there a vet school nearby? Sometimes, they will take dogs and create a payment plan. Same with specialty vets. The tests aren't showing anything at all? Not even a blood panel? Did they do a tick panel?

Re: Selective Hearing
With a chow, the trick is to make them want to do well for you. They must respect you in order for them to listen. If all you are doing is 'yank & crank' and boring the life out of him, well, there's your answer. Lots of positive reinforcement is needed, and train in short 5 minute bursts. He ha...

Re: Shadow Chaser
It could be OCD. Certain breeds (rotties, for example) are prone to it. If he is doing it constantly and consistently, then you need to speak to your vet and also bring in a behavioral trainer. There are medications they use to treat it (like in humans) that will make him less stressed out.

I haven't posted in forever, but for some reason this thread has pulled me out of my lurker hole. As an American who has been to both China and Australia (for work, in both situations) - let me stick my two cents in. China is beautiful. It is one of the most amazing civilizations in history. That be...

Rogan was neutered at five months. He is the classic chow temperment. Stoic, laid back, dignified and consistent. He is also 82 lbs. Not overweight - when he's wet he got the same body structure as my rottie. But he is tall. I've never seen canine-canine aggression out of him, nor increased puppy be...

We're not sure of how he did it that's one of the problems. He's almost 10, so there's some concern that it could be degenerative. That's one of the things we'll find out on Wednesday. He's had a history of knee problems since he was young - one of the reasons I retired him after his CD was because ...

Rogan tore his ACL
I know I haven't been around much lately and what a way to return! It looks like Rogan tore his ACL clear through. We've got an appointment with an Ortho-vet on Wednesday and our regular vet gave him Previcox to help with the pain and swellling. It's never dull around here!
