my chow has the same problem. all you can really do is clean it often. i use these eye pad wipes by Happy Tails. its smells nice...like witch hazel. you can also just use a warm wash cloth to wipe the eye area.

i spayed my first chow at 5months and she didn't have any issues or problem. she lived to be 11yrs old. my chow i currently have is now 2yrs old. i also had her spayed at 5months. she doesn't act any different...same ole dog hehe
