Re: Heavenly chows breeder?
Evidently, you misunderstood my comment. Very few purebred dogs have perfect hips, and typically, dogs are x-rayed, then given a hip score...0 is perfect and is extremely rare, due to multiple factors. Both pups scored in the normal range, but higher than 0, as I'm sure your pups would if you'd had ...

Re: What kind of Dog food do you use? / skin problems
My girl gets fed Taste of the Wild. I've had no skin issues on any of the formulas, but she definitely prefers the Ocean Fish formula to the others.

Re: What type of Collar works best for you Chow?
I use a plain jane 1" webbed nylon collar with a metal buckle. I take her collar off often in the house, and my Minnie was not crated while wearing her collar. I haven't had any issues.

Re: My Chows and CHICKEN!
My Minnie is all about the salmon. Chicken will do, however, when salmon isn't available. Liver is never acceptable, hahaha. I had a trainer try to prove me wrong. She took the liver treat, rolled it on her tongue, when politely dropped it at his feet. She then refused to acknowledge him again.

Re: Do they know the difference?
If I grab Minnie's short leash, she knows that means ride. If I hook her to her long leash, it means we're headed outside for a walk. She gets really hyper excited if I grab the short leash and a bottle of water, because that means she's going somewhere special.

Re: First time kenneling.
The first time I kenneled Minnie, I took her favorite treats, a few toys, and a shirt that I'd worn recently. She usually gets kenneled once for a week during the summer. Now that's she's a little older, I just take them her favorite treats, and she's fine. I call to check on her. She jumps right in...

Re: need help getting my chow chow puppy to listen to me.
Welcome to the world of chows! My Minnie will come when called when she wants to, not particularly when I want her to. Just continue to be consistent, and use her favorite treats when training her. Since she's a puppy, keep it to 15-20 minutes or so a day.

Re: Chow names
Minnie is named after my great-grandmother. I figured since I'm not doing human kids, I might as well use a family name
I love old-fashioned names for dogs...We've had a boxer named Duke and a bulldog named Frank (after my grandfather).

Re: confused about chow puppy's tongue
My breeder told me that some purebred chows will have spots of pink in their mouths. My Minnie has a darker tongue than her sister, but both are from the same litter.

Re: Heavenly chows breeder?
Actually, it's not true that everyone has a breeder nearby. In fact, the closet recommended breeder breeds for show--they are beautiful, but we all know they can be prone to health issues due to their smushy faces. Because I wanted a more open face, I asked for her recommendations. I was also on the...

Re: Heavenly chows breeder?
Our family has two chows from Emily at heavenlychows.com. They are beautiful, sweet, and very healthy chows. We actually drove from SC to Missouri to pick up Minnie and Kate, mainly because of a freak storm that shut down the airports, but the added benefit was getting to view the kennels. The kenne...

Re: Looking to buy a Chow, Best breeder?
My Minnie came from Heavenly Chows in Missouri (www.heavenlychows.com). We have two from her kennel, and my vet says that they are the happiest, healthiest chows he's treated. We drove out to Missouri to pick up our puppies, so that we could see the kennel and the other dogs on site. That kennel was...

Re: So how did you know you wanted a Chow?
Coco picked us. Our first chow was a 10 week old rescue ball of black fur. My mom and brother were just going to look. This little chow actually had nipped at the person picking her up. They dropped her and she ran into my brother, he picked her up, she snuggled into his arms...and she stayed with u...

If there is someone there to help you, have them feed her little bits of canned chicken. Minnie will do ANYTHING for a little bit of that chicken. The trainer I worked with recommended a high value treat that she doesn't get any other time--making it extra special. She gets it when I have to trim he...

Re: Help, how to find a reputable chow chow breeder in the N
I got my Minnie, a cream girl, and her sister Katie, also a cream from Heavenly Chows in Missouri. I get raves from all who meet them about how sweet and beautiful they are. Although Emily ships, we drove out to pick them up. I was impressed with the cleanliness and quality of her kennels. The websi...

Re: Please help my chow chow
What food are you feeding your chow? If it has corn/corn gluten/or some other corn by-product, it could be something as simple as allergies. Chows in particular are sensitive to corn. I personally avoid all corn and corn additives just to make sure my chow chow doesn't have the skin reactions our fi...

Minnie, my 2 year old chow, spends most of the night on my bed...except when she is saving the household from the evil squirrel agents that try to attack in the middle of the night. Stella, my puppy, isn't allowed on the bed much, since she uses it as an opportunity to pester Minnie.

Re: First time Chow mum
In my opinion, I would use a higher grade food than Science Diet. It is an expensive food, and if I remember correctly, it has "corn gluten meal" as one of its primary ingredients. CGM is used as an herbicide, as well as a cheap protein source in animal foods. A lot of chows have sensitivi...

The new addition to the family....
Stella is an 8 week old black shar pei/chow chow mix that was dumped in a rural part of our town. She was rescued, and as of this weekend, officially joined the family. She has a big sister, Minnie, a 2 year old cream chow chow. She is already playing chase and imitating Minnie's every move--hopeful...
