Re: Is my dog a chow?

Your chow puppy looks like an open face chow. I wouldn't worry about the colour of the tongue.

Re: Is my dog a chow?

He's a cutie. Enjoy your puppy. Just make sure you socialize the pup. Meet with other dog owners in a dog park. Preferable with same size dog as yours. Puppies can get overwhelmed with larger dogs, stick with nice dogs with a good disposition. Socializing is important to a chow chow.

Re: Long-snouted chow chows

Thanks for your comment. I am in the process of adopting a regular chow chow. I need a walking buddy and not a show piece to sit by the fireplace. I also own a pug mix. My vet assumes beagle mix. He has a slight elongated snout but still runs into problems during summer heat and cold winter days. I ...

Re: Long-snouted chow chows

Pres.Coolidge had a open faced chow, so did Sigmund Freud. I had chow with a longer snout and she'd pull a sled if I had let her. A hot summer day didn't bother her. I don't know why they're now bred with these short faces and can barely breathe or walk in the summer heat.

Re: I suddenly got a 5 month old Chow and he wont warm up to me

Never had a chow pup but thanks Rory's dad for the suggestions should work on my pug too. Pugs are more like ordinary dogs but mine appears to be stubborn very much like a chow or maybe it's because this breed is originally from China? He might even be part shar pei. Once I get him trained sufficien...

Re: I suddenly got a 5 month old Chow and he wont warm up to me

First time in my life did I adopted a rescue puppy. A pug mix. He's now 18 mths and still reverts to his play fighting puppy days. I had a few teeth marks on my arm, lower legs. I throw toys for him a lot to tire him out. I copied a neighbour's idea. I stuff a man's worksock with other old socks and...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe

Hello Karen, I lost family, relatives good friends and my partner all around 10 years ago. I coped. Last year I lost my 14 yr.old little buddy westie mix Hunter, 7 months later Mikki chow. This year my 17 yr old cat passed on too. Hard to cope with. I knew 10 years ago that all 3 pets might die with...

Re: Will Pooh Bear grow up to be mean? Please help

I adopted two adult chows and I don't have baby chow experience. One year ago I rescued a 6 month old pug mix. What a handful he was. Similar behaviour to your PB. Mouthing, biting, jumping at me. Lunging at me and I ended up with a big scratch across my nose. I then stopped all play, play fighting....

Re: I suddenly got a 5 month old Chow and he wont warm up to me

All the above is excellent advice. Many years ago I adopted a almost 2 year old chow that had been neglected by it's previous owners. I wasn't getting anywhere with Luna. I live in Canada and a nearby neighbour who is from the Philipines told me to take up meditation to become calmer around my chow....

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe

It's bittersweet, one leaves us and a new one captures our hearts. Where is Takoda from? By spring I hope to rescue an older chow. Looking for one in southern Ontario. But it seems all those needing new homes are either in California, Texas or Florida. And there are so many of them, it's heart break...

Re: Please help!

I hope the 'proud owner's' chow had her chow shaven because the fur was matted and the dog was a rescue. 'proud' owners groom their chows for the fur not to mat. There is plenty of info online and book stores to help dog owners find the best diet, groomers etc. To the owner of the shave chow, I sugg...

I am wondering if water therapy would help Loki's arthritis? I have never tried with my dogs but some dog owners swear by it.

Re: Chow Life changes

I feel guilty for not having been around for the last few years. But I remember everyone and their chows. Sorry that Mr. Nahkohe is gone too now. We'll never get over the loss only time will heal somewhat and it will get easier as time goes on. Time to do some traveling which I haven't done since 19...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe

Karen, so sorry to hear about your chow Nahkohe passing. I am just reading about your chow now. My Mikki crossed the rainbow bridge Aug 13th. She was almost 11 and had been my best friend since 2006. I find it's hardest thing to let go of a pet. One consolation, they're now without pain.

Hi Tippsy's mom. I remember you from the old days. I am glad to hear you're working and have other pets around but not happy to hear about Jasper. I have just gone through a similar experience with my chow Mikki. For almost 2 years she has done very little, she slept a lot. We had our walks at night...

:( I'm so sorry for your loss, Karin. I hope you will be able to rescue or foster at some point...so many out there that need the love and shelter that some one like yourself can provide. We will light a candle for Mikki at our Chow Chow fest next month. Thanks for the kind words. It's tough, tough...

Chow Life changes

There's been a huge change in my life and Mikki's. I finally made arrangements to have Mikki chow euthanized, at home with Phoebe cat present and people around her she knew and loved. Luckily I only live 2 blocks from the vet's office. It's done and I cannot stop thinking how different the outcome c...

Re: New Chow Owner Needs Direction

Both chows I have owned were pure bred but not show dog material. Both dogs I had spayed as there was an understanding that I do not breed them. My late chow Luna and now Mikki have come home covered with burrs, rolled in some dead carcass like a squirrel, rolled in mud and pretty well acted like re...

Re: New Chow Owner Needs Direction

I have owned 2 chow chows. Both open face chows. Not sure if that is the right term, it's something I have seen mentioned on this forum. Mine had longer legs. Something like the longer legged, longer snouted chows you see in some old photos from the 1900's. My first one was a large chow, 65 pounds a...

Re: Chow Life changes

They grow on us and when they start having health issues it's like having human babies to take care of. I became a grandma 5 years ago and wasn't really paying as much attention to my chow Mikki and terrier Hunter. Mikki was always the smarter one, had her nose at the door as soon as I came home and...

Re: Where have the others gone

I have been away for a bit working on some big changes in my life and frankly, I needed a bit of a break from the site. People come and go, and sometimes they come back. In fact, I have seen some folks come back that left in a huff, swearing it would be a cold day in Hades before they returned. I p...
